We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

Hi, I am hoping I can pick the brains of some of the Disney freaks out there! We are a family of four (two adults, & 2 children aged 6 & 10) this will be our first visit to Disney, Florida. We have been to Hong Kong Disney when the children were younger.

I haven't got a clue where to start! And have so many questions that I hope you guys can help me with please.

1) What airport should I fly into to be near the parks? It seems that Orlando has at least two airports.

2) Can you fly direct from Zurich to Orlando? If so how can I find out what airline fly direct.

3) Is there a website like Virgin that I can make bookings online?

4) I have tried ebookers but for some reason it is coming up that there is no availability, I am sure maybe I am putting the wrong airport in or maybe because there are no flights that fly direct to Orlando from Zurich???

5) We will be going for 2 weeks but do not want to spend everyday at the parks so we are thinking of looking into hiring a Villa within half an hour of the parks, this way we can speand somedays shopping for relaxing in the villas. Can anyone recommend a villa company?

Any info or tips that anyone has would be so gratefully appreciated. We are looking at going the first two weeks in October.

Many thanks

We used the Disney site last time we went there.

I would recommend that you check the in park accommodations. You get better deals in the park and some of the hotels are amazing and no more expensive than decent lodging outside of the park. Staying in the park gets you passes for the in park transportation and parking and you don't have to drive into the park every time you want to visit as you are already their.

Last time I stayed outside the park I was surprised how expensive it was and how messy and noisy it was as well. While Disney may own most of the county around Orlando it can only really control the goings on within the park.

Disney may be a bit of a dictatorial entity but they do generally know their business.

If you are staying for a 2 week period then I can understand why you wouldn't want to be stuck in the park that whole time. Maybe you should stay in park for half a week to 1 week and then move to somewhere else the other part of the time.

BTW, Disney also runs a transfer service for people staying on the property. Last time we went their, it was very easy and convenient.

Good Luck and have fun.

I used to live in Orlando so I'll try and help ya out a little

Orlando does have two airports. ORL (which is Orlando Executive, a smaller regional airport) and MCO (Orlando International). You probably cannot fly in ORL from Zurich as it doesn't support large aircraft but the two are very close to each other. Anywho, MCO is the airport you want to fly into. (Think, "Mickey and CO" = MCO)

Don't think there is a direct flight form Zurich to MCO but you can check www.swiss.com

I know Lufthansa flies there form either Munich or Frankfurt so you will probably need to connect.

I don't know of any villas but you can get some really good deals right in downtown disney.

Here's a website: http://www.downtowndisneyhotels.com/

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

1. Orlando Int. MCO
2. Don;t think so. You may have to either go to Miami and drive or its a change somewhere
3. All major airlines do online bookings
4. You can. I tried trip advisor but any should work
5. You shouldn't have a problem. Most are good. Use trip advisor, expedia etc

Re: We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

Hi
We had been to disney in florida abt 3 yrs back and had a fantastic expereince, the disney parks, sea world, Universal studio are all breath taking, plus can go to miami beaches and for curious ones NASA is very interesting and within reach. We had hired the car which made things much easier and its a very tourist family place so any resort or hotel u stay can get whole information. Can do the advance bookings online for any of the parks u want to visit there are various kinds of passes 3 theme park or 5 theme park tickets and some discount also for group bkgs. But beware of the timesharing free tickets if you are not interested in those stuff don't waste your time for that. Also the resorts there have two double beds in a room and the chrges are per room. U surely will have a rocking time.

Re: We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

We stayed at a hotel called The Wyndham Lodge at Lake Buena Vista which is actually on the complex( not to be confused with the Wyndham on International Drive).
It was excellent and a shuttle bus arrived several times to take you to which park you wanted to visit. Big highlight for me was to see an armodillo walk across the road!!
You could then have a week somewhere quieter. You will have a great time.

Re: We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

To add to some of the things the others have said:

Among the other benefits of staying at one of the Disney hotels is the ease of travel from the hotels to the parks... the drawback of that is that you don't really "see" any of the rest of the area. Your entire experience will be a Disney experience, which isn't really a bad thing, just a bit like living in a Norman Rockwell drawing (aka, a little "too" perfect).

IF you don't mind some driving though and plan to rent a car, there's no huge reason to actually STAY in Orlando. The drive from Daytona to the Disney parks is only about 90 min on a "bad" traffic day usually and the drive time is about the same from any of the towns up and down both coasts "near" Orlando.

The benefit of this is that while Disney is a popular spot in summer because of kids being out of school, the beach hotels tend to be a bit less packed and there are some deals to be found on the coasts as well. It's also a bit easier to find some "off the beaten path" sorts of restaurants if you stay at hotels in the outlying towns.

Even so, with all that said, when I lived in Daytona and friends came to visit and we intended to head to the parks, we often stayed at one of the hotels in Kissimmee which had a really great steak house (Charley's Steakhouse on Parkway Blvd) within walking distance.

*daydreams about aged filet mignon from Charley's* (I recommend the gator tail appetizer as well )

Re: We are hoping to go to Disney Florida

Personally I have not been to the Disney Parks, but have driven around the area and overflown it several times by small plane. It isn't the place I would want to spend two full weeks of my vacation. Just too artificial for my taste.

Why not:
- fly into Orlando with Delta via Atlanta
- rent a car
- spend 4 days at the parks
- drive over to the Tampa Bay area and spend part of or the rest of your vacation there
- fly back from Tampa via Atlanta

Some places in the Tampa Bay area to head with children:
- Busch Gardens
- Honeymoon Island State Park
- Caladesi Island
- Fort De Soto State Park
- Egmont Key for the Beach and Dolphin watching

For accommodation I would recommend that you rent a condo in the Tierra Verde area on the way to Fort De Soto State park.

If you are looking for a resort type area with a great pool area and a touch of luxury, Innisbrook Resort is very nice.

In case you are just passing through for a couple of days, try the Extended Stay America in Ulmerton Road. Reasonable rates, good basic facilities, central location for the entire area, excellent steakhouse a couple of blocks away, been there about a dozen times.

The ultimate place for a family beach vacation would be North Captiva Island: http://www.northcaptiva.com/
