A place I really like are 'Grotte di Nettuno', you can reach them by boat from Alghero.
There are some stairs from the caves along the cliffs to climb where you'll have a great view on the deep blue ocean. Really beautiful.

Sardinia/Cagliari - Where to stay?

Hey all,

I am booking a completely last minute trip to Cagliari for next week. I've never been to Sardinia before so I am a bit apprehensive about where to stay, especially since we're in peak season. We want to avoid the mass tourism hoardes, even if it means being somewhere quite remote and basic. Therefore can anyone recommend an un-touristy area with reasonable access to the beaches. I will have a car, so don't mind the drive out.

Cheers

I prefer the West coast. Costa Smeralda is only good out on the water, although there are very few dull areas where ever you go. Try to manage a trip to the interior - the real Sardinia - and spend some time at an Agriturismo on a goat farm or some such: there you'll eat royally.

The beaches on the south west coast are white, empty and hot.

We flew over for a few days and stayed at " Ca la Somara " Agriturismo, a converted donkey stable near the Costa Smeralda. It's very basic and rustic- no mod cons/tv/internet..but very relaxing! Quite a contrast to Porto Cervo- but depends what you like and how much money you want to spend ;-)
