We are searching for an economical holiday place (house/apt/ etc) in Croatia, very close to the ocean, and not too far away (<=2 hr drive) from the italian (trieste)/Croatian border. One house should be available 9.10-23.10 for 2 adults and 2 kids and the other between 9.10 - 16.20 for 2 adults and 5 kids. the houses should be very close to each other.

I am soliciting suggestions, based on experience and feedback. I have never been to Croatia before. What else should I be aware of, for this holiday in Croatia?

You could try island Rab, very family friendly and about 2 hours from Trieste, perhaps a little more. In October you will have no trouble getting accomodation as it is the off season. I would bet you could arrive and just find two suitable apartments side by side. Generally apartments cost between 50 - 100 Euros each day, depending on the size and number of rooms etc. This often includes breakfast.

Not to sure if you have made any bookings etc yet but we have used the following website with great success. It covers almost any country you can think of and you are able to choose the particlars which are important/necessary for you.

I know this is after October, but if you're ever looking for affordable apartments http://kroatienbilliger.de/ has very good deals. I booked with them last summer and enjoyed my stay, the apartments are very clean, well furnished and in nice locations. Perfect for families with children etc...

Croatia is a fantastic country, highly recommend a holiday there. If you can, try and head down the Dalmatian coast a little. Trogir is worth a visit and if at all possible visit the National Parks. They are outstanding.
