South West France

I wanted to go down to south West France from Zurich for a long week end (Perpignan area).

Seems to be a very difficult place to get too. It is a bit too far to drive for a weekend & all the flights are via Paris or London or other far away places so the journey takes all day.

Only possibility I have found so far is Basel/Mulhouse to Toulouse but by the time I go to Mulhouse & take a hire car in Toulouse then most of the day is also gone.

No good TGV connection either, best I found was about 9 hours.

Any suggestions welcomed

Marton

Re: South West France

I think it is too far for a weekend by car and as you said: Too remote to get there in any other way easily.

A long time ago I went camping to the Cote Vermeille and I really loved Collioure. http://www.collioure.com/

Re: South West France

Probably the quickest would be a flight to Barcelona, and hire a car or try and navigate a train to Perignan. Swiss do it and the flight times out are cool, but crappy coming back as I remember.

Re: South West France

A wonderful part of France, (I am there now!), and luckily not well-known - so don't tell too many people about it! Have a look at night trains - there was the Talgo which went to Barcelona, stopping at Perpignan, but don't know if it still runs. Otherwise have a look at flights to Gerona - it is just a short drive away, or you can get the "Frog-bus" which runs to Perpignan regularly from Gerona. Good luck - it's worth the trouble....

I don't think you can fly direct for ZH to Girona.

Re: South West France

The main difficulty with going to the south west of France is that you wouldn't be even vaguely close to Perpignan as it is in the south east!

Re: South West France

Hey there! Went to Toulon last WE. Ok so it is not the West, but we took the night train to get there... Train from Mulhouse to Toulon. Leaving at 22:00 and arriving in Toulon around 7:30. I know that there is this option from Zürich to Barcelona too! This could be an option! Otherwise sadly nothing I can think of!

Re: South West France

I go there every now and then, and it's always a mess to find a reasonable way to get there.

Last time I flew Air France via Paris (MLH/PAR/PGF) and it was ok.

I also did ZRH/BCN once and then the train up to Perpignan, but had to stay a night in BCN because there were no late trains.

The best option is the Girona airport, but there are no flights from Switzerland :-(

Next Friday am driving to Montpellier for a wedding. Could give you a lift and share the petrol. Will return Monday following.

Re: South West France

You could try the Spanish Talgo-overnight from Zurich to Barcelona with some other stops along the way. Not sure how that would work with dogs etc. and it is often booked out three months in advance...
But it beats an 8-10 hour drive!
