If a woman asks a man out on a date, is she supposed to pay?

This happened to a 'friend' recently and when the check came, he simply stared at it lying on the table, until the tension became so unbearable that the lady was forced to offer to pay for it 'this time around'.

No, but she better put out. In which case, the man will have been happy to have paid. To get laid.

ROFL. If I was her, I'd have quietly picked up my bag and walked out. You don't want to be moving any further down the line with that sort of (Swiss) crap, and a free meal is a free meal.

Unfortunately, not necessarily. It is a cultural thing. Personally, if I asked a guy out, I would pay. But at the same time, if he took care of it I would think him a gentleman and, in most cases, that would be major bonus points going forward.

Re: If a woman asks a man out on a date, is she supposed to pay?

Your "friend" is aparently not that much into her... so why date? Switzerland, as we have discussed many times, is a bit on the old-fashioned side (some call it backwards): Here, the man pays. End of story.

P.S: I know an office in Zurich where the unmarried men warn each other about a girld that always askes them out to the top class restaurants and then expects to be invited in the end...

How long did you your friend have to wait until she paid?

Did she put out?

Well in that case hope he made it worth her while! Soon he'll learn what equality is. Bet he wont be asked out again though.

Is it really "Taking someone out" if you don't pay?

irrespective of Gender.... I'm old school, and the "Asker" pays.(which is nearly always the man)

In this case, the chick should pay.

How else would you handle a situation where a chick might want to eat at a REALLY expensive restaurant (and has no interest in you) and she asks you out.

Can't people share the bill? Is that a big no-no? Or have I been too long in northern Europe to understand the subtleties of the role of money in the precoital parade south of the Elbe?

I would just say "Dutch", unless she mentioned extra dessert at of her place or mine.

Agreed,

A chick would walk out on you if you pulled the same trick.

ESPECIALLY if she had no intentions of paying with her furry purse.

I got the impression it was really totally normal here to go halves. Maybe not on dates then?
Did he put out then, we might well ask?

My 'friend' did not really want to go, but agreed in order to be polite and because he thinks that everything is worth trying at least once. He was not the least interested in anything she had to say during dinner, finding her exceedingly boring, and would liked to have left sooner which he indicated by refusing dessert, but she went and ordered one of the most elaborate desserts on the menu, increasing the length of the ordeal, the size of the bill, and her waistline, which was not appreciated on all counts.

Re: If a woman asks a man out on a date, is she supposed to pay?

Having been in the situation a few times, the woman paid. And insisted on it after I suggested sharing he bill, saying she had invited me to dinner. That's how it works in the normal world and even for women who have invited me here.

But then I live in a crazy universe where men cook and do dishes and women are expected to have a career.

..then I take it your "friend" needs some serious lesson in womanology.
