How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

hi all

my husband is Canadian and his PP will expire in Oct 2011.
An email to the government was answered in French and we "think" we are required to hand in a birth certificate and a signed picture from someone who's either a lawyer or doctor and has known him for at least 2 years.
Problem: go and ask your doc to sign your pic and he'll laugh at you - we don't know that here.
The alternative would be to get a notary to sign a form that you have appeared in front of him and he confirms you are who you say you are.

Has anyone ever had to go through this procedure, how did you do it and how long did it take until you got your PP (as we'll have to hand the old one in and he won't be able to travel until the new one is issued) or would it just be easier to do that during a Canada vacation - can a Canadian living overseas apply for a new PP in Canada at all?

Glib answer is you should be looking at www.englishforum.ca but as you ask about the notary you can do this without an appointment and it costs 20 CHF.

Give the embassy in Berne a call and request an adult passport renewal form. The package that is sent to you has all of the info. If you do not know anyone who can sign for you, you may go to the embassy in person and sign in front of the passport officer. It takes two weeks to have new passport and you will also have to submit the old passport to the embassy.
You will also have to make payment to the Embassy before the passport is released to you. This can be done by E-banking or with the white payment slip from the post office. Once done send or fax a copy to the embassy with a follow up call if it is urgent and they will put the passport in the mail.
Note.. Tell them when you would like to have your passport because if you dont they will take their time in sending it back to you even though the passport is in the embassy in Berne.
Any bank signing officer is also able to act as a signer.

If you were living in the States or Canada you no longer have to go through this process. Download the form from the internet , fill it in and return with your passport and its sent back to you in two to five days.

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

I have done this twice overseas.

First, contact the embassy to find an appropriate photographer. The pictures must be the correct size for Canadian passports. (They might have a list of appropriate photographers on their website, but it is just easier to call)

The first time, I got my dentist to sign it. There were not any issues, just explained the situation and he signed no problem.

I printed the documents from the government website and went to the office directly, since I am in Bern. They will take your forms in and double check them. If there is anything wrong, they will ask to correct the documents.

Once the secretary has approved your documents, you can then pay with CHF.

I think it takes about a month for it to be completed. They will then mail to you, or if you like you can pick it up.

-----------------------

The other time I did it, the embassy signed the documents as the notary.

thanks, but it was actually the Embassy in Bern that told us we'll have to go and see a notary in Zurich. They were not very helpful at all as the lady's english was really bad and I was having a hard time figuring out what she was trying to say.. we'll try and get a new one in Calgary next time we fly over, if we can't do that there's still enough time to try again here.

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

It's dead easy getting new Canadian passport done while you're here, I'd say it's even easier than when in Canada, it gets processed so quickly. Mine took about a week once I submitted my payment.

You can download the application form here:

http://www.pptc.gc.ca/form/pdfs/pptc040.pdf

This document includes a description of the requirements for your passport photo, and also outlines who can sign as a notary, and what to do if you can't find a suitable notary. Once the application is filled out, send it off to Bern along with the old passport. Instructions for paying the fee are on the consular website. New passport arrives at the post office a week or two later.

This topic has also been discussed in this thread.

There is a photographer in the Zurich HB by the McFit who does CDN passport photos - I think it cost me 40 CHF.

There is a spot on the application form where you can put your next date of travel. I would put a date 1 month from when you submit it. I got mine within 5 days of paying and I did have to submit the application signed by someone who has known me for 2 years with signing power (had a lawyer friend do it), 2 signed pictures, my birth certificate and passport about to expire. I had to pay 125 CHF before they would process it.

FYI the embassy in Bern is totally useless. I've given up dealing with those people.

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

Not sure about how to go about the signing part, but for the photo, print off the form and take it with you to the photographer. Even if you can't communicate with them, they will understand it. They pulled out a ruler and made sure all of the measurements were correct when I did it here (take a ruler with you to be sure it meets the criteria). Make sure the store stamps the back of the photo as it must have a stamp from a store along with the date the photo was taken. They will look at you funny when you ask this, but it is required. If the pictures are not stamped, they will send them back to you and make you redo them. Also, on the form, there is somewhere that you can write down that you need it done quickly so that you can travel. I would recommend putting a date down or checking the box (can't remember what it was) as they really get it to you quickly if you ask them. I didn't have a trip booked when I filled out the form, but something came up and I needed my new passport quicker than expected and after explaining my situation, they rushed it through and I had it in less than a week.

Hope it goes as well for you as it did for me!

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

Hi Sminja,

I just renewed my passport in July and it took about 20 days to get back. I have only been in Switzerland for 6 months, so I also didn't have a guarantor. But its not a problem. They have a separate "in lieu of guarantor" form for you to fill out in which you need to provide 2 additional pieces of ID and 2 additional references. The ID and references can be from any country.

There is a date at the top of the form where you can enter a date of your travels in order to get it back in time. I wasn't actually going anywhere but I still filled it out. I think the target time for the passport office is 15 days plus a few for shipping.

I didn't have any problems with the photo, I just had one taken at a shop here and they accepted it no problem.

They do collect your current passport and birth certificate and they are returned to you with your new passport so just make sure you don't have any big travel plans that might require your passport. Unfortunately there is no way to get a new passport while in Switzerland without sending in your current/old one. The only way to avoid that is to actually travel to Canada and renew it in person.

Good luck. It was much easier then I thought it would be. Also, its interesting that your response came back in French?!?

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

Quick heads up people (yeah, I actually have a question...).

My usual "Guarantor" was the local ombudswoman who I've known for years, but she doesn't work at the town hall any longer and going through the acceptable Guarantor professions, I see "Signing Officer of a Bank" as being an option.

Has anyone used their Bank Manager as a Guarantor for their passport application?

Thanx.

No, however my (late) wife always used to use her doctor as a guarantor when applying for a new Canadian passport.

"dentist, medical doctor
judge, magistrate, police officer
mayor
notary public
practising lawyer, notary
signing officer of a bank"

Doesn't have to be yours, just someone who knows you at least 2 years and fits into one of those groups.

You clearly hang out with the wrong crowd.

My biker buddies include lawyers, doctors, cops, a judge, and a former director of the Bundesbank.

Re: How do you apply for a new Canadian passport?

Did the bank help out when all you need are two signatures that they can't charge for?

Hell no!

Managed to get the town mayor to scrawl his name down as Guarantor. Simple question - if you've already had a bunch of passports over decades why do we still have to jump through fiery hoops to find a Guarantor? Dear Ottawa, we only need to travel, just make this process simpler. If you've given me a passport before and I haven't committed any heinous crimes against humanity since, just give me a new passport will ya?

Pretty please.
