digital recorder hack?

Anyone managed to get content off something like a Cablecom digital recorder onto a PC?

It would kill me to delete all my League of Gentlemen and Alan Partridge...

Your best bet would be to get a DVD-Recorder that can do DVD-RAM (I think all the Panasonics do) and a drive for the PC that can read it.

Just record your programmes off the box to the DVD-RAM and read the files onto the PC. You can then re-author them for DVD (eg. make your own compilations) or convert them to another format (like DivX/mpeg4).

Actually, any DVD recording format would do but DVD-RAM is a pretty good way of recording files so that they are computer-friendly.

If you want perfect digital copies of BBC programmes without having to re-record them to DVD first, get a satellite dish and something like a Dreambox or one of the other receivers out there that has a method of connecting to a PC. BBC comes in unscrambled so no problem watching or recording it (You'll also get BBC3 and 4 and News24 plus ITV1,2,3 and 4, Sky News and Film4).

Re: digital recorder hack?

Something to consider. I get beeb 1 and 2 although 3, 4 would be nice and ITV for Champions league would be even better.

Satelites scare the bejesus out of me for some reason. What is a dreambox? I think I have some research to do!

Thanks for the ideas.

I think you'll first be scuppered by a lack of south-facing balcony mate ..... I think south for you is on the side away from Coop - do you have a balcony there?

Plus ITV is free to air so you'll get some Champions League on a basic sat system. Do consider that Sky has rights to many of the games though.

Alternatives lie at 13e or 16e as opposed to 28e for Sky/UK telly. 13e has ART Sport and 16e has DigitALB (with sport and movies and programmes). North African/Middle Eastern footy fans pay much less than we do

Re: digital recorder hack?

btw to archive your stuff from the box, a simple TV card and PVR software (usually with the card) would allow you to record from the Cablecom box to your PC and you could then get it into a format to create your own DVDs of those shows (as an option to what Gav posted)....

Oh, you would need a DVD burner in the PC of course...

Aye, I have precisely such a balcony, it faces away from the Coop - so SSE, I reckon it could just about hit South bang on.

So what are my options besides having to go through the whole 'get sky at uk address' rigmarole...

Re: digital recorder hack?

you can get a simple FTA system with dish (80cm is good) and point it at 28 degrees east (so 152 degrees from magnetic north). 32 degrees elevation.....and you're good for BBC1-4 and ITV1-4
