Twitter - I don't get it??

Am I the only one? I don't get the layout, I don't get why the media are in love with it, I don't get why people post on it.

For example, someone I know follows loads of 'famous' peoples twitter pages, and post all kinds of gushing crap on there tweets, do they really think these people a) even post this rubbish themselves b) would even read what these idiots post and c) even if they did, what do people expect them to do?? oh this person sounds like a real friend, I'm going to pop round there house and brighten up there sad little life.

I'm with you on this.

I not only don't get it, but I don't give a stuff about famous people's lives.... I have my own.

You should start a poll on this, I'd be interested to see what other people think about "Twit"ter as well.

I neither understand nor like it. What you're getting is an overkill of useless info imo.

I don't get it either:msncrazy:

Why do people/celebs have to announce pregnancies etc on it, can't they just pick the phone up - do we care???

Why would I be interested in boring Phillip Schofield?

This is quite funny. They should come up with some tool to let other people tell you.

useful for some things (like the last news of John Barrowman :D without having to go on the official website or read the emails....)

used it too to have news of a forum I was administrator (...)

also to have news of some friends.

I tried Twitter once for a few days and a trace of the bemused expression it gave me still lies on my face. Pointless, pointless, pointless. Oh, and pointless.

Re: Twitter - I don't get it??

I like Twitter a lot, and don't understand why people get so het up about it. It's a form of instant messaging, that's all.

I use it to keep in touch with friends, make arrangements, chat about football matches while they are being played, occasionally TV programmes etc. It's used to disseminate news quickly, tell jokes, or just chat. It's a good way of getting news headlines and sports news when you're out and about.

It's nothing to do with celebs per se. You can choose to follow who you want, so you'd have to ask individuals why they follow particular people.

Don't waste energy trying to "get" Twitter. You're either an instant messenger type or not. I know plenty of (mainly elderly) people who are not online at all, who think that email, and the internet in general, is unnecessary. I still have a couple of friends who don't even have mobile phones.

Personally I don't bother with Facebook, even though most people I know use it.

In other words, there's a whole menu of digital communication options out there, and you pick and choose what suits you. Must say, it wouldn't occur to me to post to a forum, complaining about what other people prefer :D.

Re: Twitter - I don't get it??

I quite like Twitter.

Most of my twitter contacts are old mates from the UK and elsewhere, and the twitter feed allows us to keep up to date with each other, ask for help (we're mainly tech guys), and just share jokes. Its like an ongoing conversation through the day.

I "follow" a few famous people, but generally because i'm interested in what they have to say, e.g. Prof. Jim al-Khalili, Jonathan Turley, etc. The only famous person who i follow just for the sake of following him is Cesc Fabregas, but thats ok, because he captains the best football team in the world :)

Well no, but how about a nice stimulating conversation with someone who would otherwise be unreachable.

I just think it's a shame Twitter wasn't around when Eric Morcombe and Spike Milligan were alive.

I have a Twitter account, I even have followers. Never posted a thing mind you, I created the account about 18 months ago and my latest follower joined me about 2 months ago .

There are a couple of Gems on Twitter that I look at "Shit my Dad Says" is incredibly funny & Rutger Hauer is crazy enough to be entertaining. As for following the masses that would be no thanks.

Sheesh. Calm down. It's like saying email is rubbish, or phone calls are rubbish.

Twitter is just the medium, and different people treat it in different ways. If it's not a tool you would find useful, then don't use it, but don't confuse the medium with the content. If some kids use it to send their mates trivial messages about their bodily functions, that's up to them. Why get so upset about it? It's not something you will ever see.

I suspect that 99% of the people who whinge about Twitter have never used it, and don't fully understand why it's used. If you and a bunch of friends have Twitter accounts, you should instantly see its benefits. It's just a form of text messaging. If you find texting or instant messaging useful, you'd probably find Twitter useful. If you don't, you wouldn't.

I don't get it.

Then again, I don't get text messaging either. OK it's useful now and again if you're on the go, but people chat on it for ages. What's wrong with calling people up? When PCs can understand speech, do you think everyone will be using a keyboard? And why can't I leave a voicemail without the phone ringing first? That'd be useful to me.

All the shops should be shut on Sunday's too, like in Switzerland, but that's another rant...

Re: Twitter - I don't get it??

I agree with all the comments by @peterg.

It's very much a case of different strokes for different folks and certainly nothing to get up in arms about.

I like Twitter a lot and have found it incredibly useful for sourcing a vast array of information and making good contacts, socially and for business. Certainly with regards to any businesses that would benefit from wider Internet exposure, then Twitter is definitely an excellent free internet marketing platform for achieving this and really does not take much time once you get the hang of it. Some people have been very successful through using Twitter alone for their business marketing activities, in particular, SMEs and entrepreneurs.

However, I am definitely not addicted to it and agree totally that there is a tremendous amount of nonsense tweeted by celebrities and non-celebrities alike but then I don't have to read any of it or follow them do I? :).

Like many who have already commented on this thread, before I started using Twitter, I too was heavily opposed to it and considered it an absolute waste of time! Also, that like FaceBook (have since revised my opinion on that too), it was for teens and young people with too much time on their hands! Then I decided to practice what I preach - so to speak - and have a go before passing final judgement and ended up not only liking it but promoting it to others :).

Curious to know whether anyone here is twittering for business purposes, and specific to Swiss banking/finance/taxation issues? Or knows of any interesting Twitters feeds to follow on those topics?

I personally could give a crap about twitter, but I really liked this series of tweets:

(warning: language is a bit saucy)

Dammit, link doesn't work, evidently. Just google "holy s*** I was just in a plane crash" and it'll be the first link. I am failing at the innerwebs today

i never really understood it either and also found it hard to understand. but i signed up for an account and actually found that it is useful for business because it can enable you to run certain promotions and marketing in a way which is not currently possible with google+.

I too have started using it for business, but it's only really useful if you have some friendly followers who are kind enough to re-tweet your tweets..... as far as reading tweets though I find I just get far too many coming in, many of which are just duplicates of what I have read on FB. The jury is still out for me...

I've started Twittering, mainly picking up on Swiss news of the day with a focus on offshore banking and finance items. CHF has figured prominently and I am following and followed by a couple franc traders. Am interested to see if anyone on here has a similar focus.

Following off this thread, a couple of The Local are following my feed. Which is interesting because I am trying hard to be faster than The Local...
