Can I apply for two apartments at once

I like them both and do not want to miss out on one because I chose the other to apply for and did not get accepted

Thanks

I don't see a problem, but if you are offered both, one will charge you an admin fee should you refuse their offer. Around CHf200.

Not entirely correct. If you are offered the apartment on telephone, or by email, if you refuse BEFORE the rental contract is prepared, then no. Read the fine print on the application form. If you do not speak German, please do not sign what you do not understand.

Re: Can I apply for two apartments at once

I should warn that you can get into the situation I am in now where I applied to more than one and, of course, the one I loved is not getting back to me with an anwer while the one that was just OK accepted me right away and is getting irritated that I am stalling so I may lose the OK one (which was pretty nice but not as good of a location as the one I loved) and be left with nothing.

My advice: Take the okay one. While it is not your first choice, you may never hear back from the person on the one you really wanted. If you happen to hear back from them before you sign a lease on the okay one, you will have to pay a fee for backing out of the okay one. It's a small price to pay for getting the one you love. Not getting an answer in a timely fashion is rarely a good sign.

An ex-colleague applied for 2 apartments and ended up getting stuck with 2 apartments and double rent for 3 months.

Re: Can I apply for two apartments at once

It depends how you define 'applied'....we gave our details for four apartments when we moved, and were offered all of them...so we turned down three offers...

We had not signed anything that would be a 'rental contract' just gave a file with our application details and information...

There was only one apartment that I saw that were taking forms on the day...

One group took nearly 6 weeks to get back to us on the apartment, and we had questions about it, and they didn't answer those, and then they got a little cranky with us when we turned down their offer, because we'd already signed for something else!!! Talk about disorganised!

I think perhaps a phone call or email to the agent, for the one you really like, to tell them you really like it but you have been offered something else and you need an answer by X date...would be appropriate...

Sucky... we finally got the place we loved to give us an answer (of course it was denied) before the deadline of the OK one. Today the agent for the OK place came back from vacation and called to say something like "sorry, even though we accepted you, while I was on vacation my assitant screwed up and signed someone else".

You'd think in such a hot market agents would have their stuff together. Also we didn't look in Geneva or Lausanne becuase we knew the markets were rough there and were looking in the small towns on the main train line between Geneva and Lausanne instead becuase we were told it would be much easier to get an apartment.

I guess the moral for the OP on the thread is when you get a place go and sign right away becuase you never know what is going to happen. Try to juggle multiple places and you can get burned.

I'm sorry you are having a hard time. But I don't know where you learned that it would be easier in smaller towns ON the trains line. Smaller towns, less options. You and I have already discussed that trying to live within walking distance to the train station is a bad idea.

Now, you can perhaps use this "screw up" to your advantage. You need to call back the agent, a visit is probably best if you are good actor, and give her your best sad puppy dog voice/face and ask her, since she screwed up and left you in a very bad situation as you were planning your whole life around this apartment that her assistant stole from under you, is there anyway possible she could help you find a solution to this? She must know of something coming up on the market and could give you first dibs.

What you describe happened exactly (without need for the puppy face, begging etc). The agent felt bad and did everything to help us - giving us preference on any other places they had coming up. (But we ended up liking a place in Prangins from a different agency.. and they accepted our application within a few hours of applying!)

Re: Can I apply for two apartments at once

I think you can but you have to be careful when you sign the application it might say that you may need to pay i.e. chf 100 for admin fee if they accept you but then you cancel.

Good luck!

Re: Can I apply for two apartments at once

how about apply for 2 apartments from the same agency at the same time?

There is an apartment that i really like, but the current tenant told me that the chance is small, bcoz 15 ppl applied to it already. From the same agency, there is also an apartment that is quite ok (100 chf higher) and we are the first one who saw it. I was thinking to apply for both at the same time. so if i loose the first one, i could get the second time. But my husband think that it is better to apply one at a time. He afraid that if we apply for both, they will not considered us for our first priority and give us the second one. so it is better to apply for the second after the first is being rejected. But i'm a little bit afraid that we might loose both of them. What do you guys think?

Re: Can I apply for two apartments at once

Yes

You can apply to as many apartment as you want, but be sure you dont commit anyone without a decision as if you say 'Yes" for an apartment and then refuse it they will charge you their fee.
As I already have faced it.

All the Best

Not entirely true. Some agencies like "Naef" refuse that you apply to more than 1 appartment at the time.

Stupid I know, especially that some appartments can be available in like 4 months away, some earlier. And also with the poor rate of success...

So in theory, yes you can (should!!!) apply to more than 1 appartment, in practice its not always possible.
