Moving to Bern from Neuchatel

Hello EF members,

A merry Xmas to all of y'all.

I lived in Neuchatel for 2.5 years and now have a job in Bern. I want to move to Bern for obvious reasons like, lower tax, german speaking canton and much alive city than Neuch.

However, I am in India until 19 Jan, 2011 and I ended my apartment contract in Neuchatel on November, 2010 since I was suppose to move to Bern from Feb 2, 2011, when the new job begins.

I dont need to mention how difficult it is to get an apartment. And since I am in India, the best and only source for me to hunt for an apartment until 19 jan is via Comparis.ch, immo etc.

Doesnt look like I can take an apartment without taking a look at it and 11 days wont be enough for me to get the apartment. So for now, i am planning to live in Neuchatel until March or April end, with a friend of mine.

Now that I explained my case, I had 3 questions

1.) is there any way, i can find a temporary accommodation in Bern for the month of Feb, March 2011 so in the meanwhile I can finalise on my apartment in Bern.

2.) in case I live in neuchatel for the month of Feb March 2011, wont my in hand salary, after tax, be a bit lower than when i move to Bern, since Neuchatel has higher tax than Bern. And will it be an issue if I move cantons to change the tax that I pay, or does the companies usually take care of this.

3.) Is there any other way, than internet websites, where I can find apartment, after I am physically present in Bern, e.g I saw some ads in Migros at times, similarly, is there a common place where apartments are being given / taken, which will give me a higher chances of seeing those apartments which are not advertised on the net.

Thanks a lot guys, m kinda tensed, coz I would hate to travel 2 hours every day, via public transport from Neu to Bern, and take up a new job and look for apartment, furniture etc etc.

Thanks a lot and have a merry Xmas and a great new year

A.J

Re: Moving to Bern from Neuchatel

You can rent a room in a house in Bern by looking for a WG (Wohngemeinschaft) usually they like to see a 12 month commitment.

There are many crooks and swindlers operating in the estate agency business in Switzerland. Don't sign anything or hand over a deposit unless you are sure it is legitimate and in your interests!

Okay,i'll like to confirm if you really have the finance line up ready with the interest of renting my apartment before i travel down for the contract and assessment.Cos I'm quite sure you will like to see the apartment before making payment and i think it's not fair me asking you to send me money for the property you haven't access to know if suit your taste or not.cos the person that disappointed me before show me his bank statement of his account which at last disappointed me and i wont like to experience such thing again

But i think we can do it this way,by you sending the 980 pounds on your friend name down to LONDON through western union for me to verify by sending me the senders and receivers name or scan payment receipt for verification from western union by calling them to ask if the money is really there and if they can confirm to me that the money is there, then i'll schedule a visit down to LONDON right away to meet with you for the assessment and contract sign. This is because I was a victim of bad experience a months ago.which i traveled from Newcastle here to meet some fake tenants without confirming their seriousness and readiness,it was later I realized they have no money ready for the rent but just to view the apartment because they love the apartment...I wasted my money and time.Since then I have been advised by my Attorney not to meet any tenant without confirming his/her ability to pay for the rent deposit.

Mind you these will first allow you to access the apartment and when finished with the assessment and sign the contract form, which we can then both walk down into any western union office around there in LONDON for you to withdraw the money and pay me in cash cos you are the sender which you are free to withdraw back your money anytime you wishes and you can as well ask any of your friend to help you to send the money on your name via western union to London cos i won't like waste my time traveling down to meet with you without any genuine proof and immediately i get the western union proof from you i will make the reservation and also to meet with you for the assessment

Hope these arrangement is fare enough?as i'll be expecting the western union payment proof as soon as possible.

Regards

Re: Moving to Bern from Neuchatel

The easiest way to find a flat is to call the property agencies like: Von Grafenried Liegenschaften, Jordi Liegenschaften, Marti AG etc...

Or look here:

There are some people who even cycle from bern to neuchatel for work. It's only 30 mins by train. Depends on which train you get though.

I agree, however, I would like to live in Bern, since my German is better than my french. I am kinda tired of Neuch and its lifestyle, and now want to experience Bern and the 3rd reason is higher tax in Neuch.

However, if I dont get an apartment in Bern, I might have to cycle Neuch-Bern-Neuch until the time I get an apartment, which I wanna avoid and hence looking for a temporary stay for a few months, until I get the apartment of my likes.

Thanks Ittigen,

Last night it struck me, that since I am getting married on Nov 11, which is like a year from now. I wouldnt wanna hurry and get an apartment asap. I can live in an shared flat with a good room mate until September 11 and until them look for an apartment which will fulfill my needs and matches my likes. Start the accomadation contract from October 11, get it furnished in a month and then fly to get married. This way, will not only give me time to have a detailed search, and get the apartment ready just before get married, but also give me enough time to look throughly.

I will take a look at the links you mentioned and keep a look out for swindlers. I did mail a few wgzimmer guys yesterday. But since its Xmas time, i dont expect things to move immediately. Will keep you guys posted.

Once I am in Bern, hope to meet some EF members

Cheers
A.J
