Questions about housing in/near to the Jura

Hi everyone,

I just joined the forum. This is my second post. I am taking a job as a 'medecin-assistant' (junior doctor) in the Jura. The hospital is situated very near to the French border and about 35-45 mins from Basel and Biel.

I am coming from Tel Aviv and before that from Montreal, both of which are very large cosmopolitan cities. So, for me working in a very small city will be an experience. I'm trying to balance this small city experience by living in a larger city and commuting daily to work.

The fact that Basel is German speaking and I'm anglo/franco-phone doesn't really bother me that much because I've heard there are lots of expats living there. Having the airport so near-by is also a big plus.
Biel is bilingual, but as an alternative isn't that appealing to me for some reason.

Besides these two places, does anyone have suggestions about livable cities/villages?

Living in Basel, working in Jura

Hi everybody, I posted this question earlier, but perhaps I didn't get any replies because of my wording in the title, so I hope I'll be more successful this time around.

I got a job in Moutier (in the Jura) as a médecin assistant. I'm really happy about the position and the hospital seems great, but I'm not willing to live in a city of 15000 inhabitants. I was shocked when I realized how everything closed in the afternoon. I need an open coffee shop or restaurant to unwind after work. Also, my wife is moving with me and she won't be working for at least 3 months, so I can foresee how bored she would be.

I'd like to live in Basel and commute daily to and from the hospital. I think Basel is a great place and has everything a large cosmopolitan city has to offer. I speak only french and english, but reading other threads posted here, I gather that Basel is livable for ex-pats not speaking German. The drive is approximately 40 mins one way. I haven't really looked up train travel times, but it's probably the same.

Does this seem logical based on my situation? Are there any other options you guys could offer? Any tips or advice would be great.

Re: Living in Basel, working in Jura

Why not live in Neuchatel? Small town, but plenty of bars, restaus, shops, by the Lake, near mountains, and French speaking. You might pay a bit more tax, but rents should be much cheaper.

Edited. Looked up the route 66km/just over an hour, via Bienne/Biel. Perhaps too far for you. I've never lived in Biel/Bienne, but I've been told it is nice though.

If you want to work out itineraries from place to place in Switzerland, look up www.tcs.ch They give you a detailed route/map with timings and distances.

Re: Living in Basel, working in Jura

Hi Swiss Ninja, welcome to the forum, and welcome soon to switzerland!

I've never been to Basel, but I've heard it's a really nice city to live in. I'm living in Canton Jura, but my nearest city in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which is French speaking - maybe you can have a look at it. I'm quite new here myself, but so far so good. I think it's a little further than Basel, but just another place to have as an option.

In my opinion, if you speak French, would be easier to communicate with neighbours and make friends in a French-speaking part of Switzerland, although you could be motivated to learn German in Basel.

You didn't mention if your wife spoke French or German, perhaps this could make a difference to how bored she might feel regardless of the size of the city.

Another option is Delémont, someone recently posted about moving there, so maybe you could read that thread too...
Délémont?

Have you considered looking at villages along the way too? Maybe you can find a nicer place to stay for the same price as the city somewhere along the way to Moutier, say direction Basel?

Well I wish you good luck with your new venture!

Re: Living in Basel, working in Jura

I am reading all the replies - thanks to everyone for their advice!

In reading another thread about Delemont, I am now debating about living in the Jura. At the same time, Basel seems to offer everything and my wife who doesn't speak German or French would probably feel more comfortable in a larger city... with an aeroport close by

I think the best thing to do is to actually see the city and the apartments after I move rather than make a decision now.

Can anyone recommend a 2-week rental in Basel for two people? Homegate is a great site, but everyone wants long-term commitments.

Hi, are you working in Moutier? Have you ever been to St Imier?
I think the road distance is the deciding factor for you.
