3500-4000 rental per month for 3 beds where would you live?

My husband will be working in Opfikon and we have a budget of max 4000CHF per month including bills. He really wants to cycle into work and we like Kilchberg but wondered where people would live with that kind of budget that is nice for family living?
My husband keeps saying how cheap Opfikon is but think it is not the place to live that he thinks what with airport and industrial feel. It is true to say the right side of the lake is more expensive than the left side as well?
Any help much appreciated
Thanks so much

Īn my opinion, with that budget, and you are looking for a 3 bedroom (4 room flat), you should not find it too difficult to pick from either the left or right side of the lake. Generally speaking, yes the right side of the lake (Zollikon, Meilen, Herrliberg) is more expensive than the left side (Kilchberg, Ruschlikon, Thalwil) but it all depends on what you are looking for and there are many different factors of why one flat with the same dimensions may be more expensive than another (location, lake view, recently rennovated, schools, taxes, public transportation, etc).

Most places in Zurich and surrounding area are suited for family living...some places are better than other depending on what is most important for you. You need to think what is important to you, being in the city?, being close to nature?, being close to work?, being close to the airport? having good schools?...with some more narrow and focused parameters, others will be able to help you more.

It's more expensive to be near to, or have a view of, the lake on either side. The gold coast gets more hours of sun in the afternoon so it is more expensive... But from the other side you get a lovely sunny view even if you are shivering in the shade.
Being close to a motorway, train tracks, airport can bring your price down-noise polution can devalue a lovely house unless it's really central etc.
Kilchberg is usually fairly pricey I would have thought? Lovely and quiet with views of lake.

Oerlikon would be a good option. Less ghetto, certainly.
