Has anyone lived near CHUV (Lausanne)?

Hello forum,

My husband and I are new to Lausanne and are seeking our first apartment. We have an offer to rent a place near CHUV - actually, directly across from both the helipad and the ambulance bay.

It seems like a good place overall, but I am wondering how much noise there would be. Does anyone have experience living this close to CHUV? Do you lose much sleep due to the ambulance and helicopter traffic?

Thanks!

Re: Has anyone lived near CHUV (Lausanne)?

I lived for three years in Av. Montagibert. I never heard the ambulance, and I soon got used to the sporadic noise of the helicopter. I loved the area, very green, quite and at a walking distance from the center. If you like the apartment, I would go for it!

Mansi -

Thanks so much for your response ! First-hand experience is really helpful!

This apartment is also on Montagibert, and we really like the location and the feel of the neighborhood (from what we have seen). Regarding the helicopter: do you remember it coming frequently at night, did you lose many nights of sleep? We don't know how busy the helipad is ...

Re: Has anyone lived near CHUV (Lausanne)?

It very much depends on where the helicopters come from. I lived at the end of the street, close to the roundabout, and rarely the helicopters came from that direction. I may be a heavy sleeper, but I never lost a single night of sleep because of that!

I lived in the Falaise house which is literally in front of CHUV. I was never bothered by the noise.

Swiss-ninja,

Merci! Je suis infirmière, mais je dois pratiquer mon français avant je peut travailler à CHUV .

In the meantime, I will study and enjoy the helicopter landings!

Hi,
I live just near Ours metro station, so down the hill a bit from CHUV. We do hear the helicopters going over, and the ambulances going by, but haven't had any issues with them during the night. My other half is a v light sleeper and it's not disturbed him...
hope that helps!

Re: Has anyone lived near CHUV (Lausanne)?

Thought to bring up this topic again. I am now looking at the housing at Vallon area, which according to google earth should be just beside CHUV (but somehow no direct access). can anyone comment on this area? How far is it from Riponne metro station? Is it practical to ride bicycle between the two places? I see no much high difference but somehow everyone said "up to the hill"...?

Thanks for your comment.

I guess it depends on what "Vallon" you are talking about (rue, place, area?).

It could be 1 or 1.5 km away and you might be closer to the CHUV metro stop. But yes, "Vallon" is generally up hill from Riponne.

Place du Vallon. But I see from google maps there is no way to go directly to CHUV, but has to go down to Rue Dr. César Roux and then up again...?

Pl. du Vallon is less than a km to Riponne. Where do you need to go? CHUV the hospital or CHUV the metro?

There is a part around that area that is above the other part so it may in fact be that you need to go down and up. You may be able to cross a park/wooded area. Looks like Ch du Calvaire cuts through. It also looks like a path not a 'road'. But, I'm not in Lausanne right now so I can't check it out for you.

Maybe one of our other Lausannites could.

Good luck!

Thanks miniMia.

I need to go to CHUV metro. From googlemaps the Chemin du Calvaire does not seem to cut through, no (see pic where the "A" is)? Wondering....Maybe there is no road for cars but some shortcuts? I shall go to Lausanne soon and see it myself...

If you look with google maps satellite you see that there are stairs going up from where "A" is.

Thanks! The stairs are not so clear....do you think one can walk all the way to CHUV Metro using the stairs?

Vallon is a pretty rough area generally, with druggies and alkies hanging around. There is a Salvation Army hostel for the homeless.

Montagibert is fine.

Yes. Thanks. It looked like a path of some kind.

Anyway, JT, if you need to get to the metro and not the CHUV itself, you are better off heading down to Riponne. It's only about 500km. You could even walk that in no time.

Oh...is Vallon really so bad? I read about the incinerator too? Is the air quality etc ok? But if there is a hospital there, it can't be so bad?

Calling Lausanner - is Vallon area really bad?

p/s: miniMia: Yeah...I think I will just go to Rippone metro.

The air quality if fine. The incinerator is quite tall. I've never noticed it to be dangerous. A bit deserted actually and not very pretty.

It's an ugly little area right there. I think it is precisely because you are in a little valley (ie, un vallon. ) You'd be better off on the other side of that hill, near the CHUV metro.

Re: Has anyone lived near CHUV (Lausanne)?

I used to live in Cesar Roux and worked at the CHUV. I occasionally walked up the very steep chemin du Calvaire - thats your path, and its not called Calvary for nothing. However, I was young and foolish then, I wouldnt do it today. You have to go through the nasty area of Vallon to get to it. I dont think there are many flats there, its mainly unrenovated rooms used by the dregs of society.

I could not really find a lot of information about Vallon from the internet. The good thing I read is that it is near to the centre and there are a lot of greeneries. May I ask what are the things that is bad in Vallon (Rue du Vallon, Place du Vallon) in your opinion?

Regarding the path to CHUV metro, yeah thanks. So now I know there is a way to "cut" the way from Vallon to Chuv, but the path seems to be very steep. Maybe that's why the path is not suggested by google maps...
