Is it necessary to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced annually?

Do you have to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced on an annual basis even though there is nothing wrong with it (appears to work normally)?

Our contract is very short and does not go into details at all so I am not sure whether to contact V-Zug to have the appliances checked. When we were moving out of the old apartment we were told that's something that needs to be done in order to complete the check out.

Any advice on this would be welcome.

Hi there,
we've moved 4 times during the last 7 years (in the German Part of Switzerland) , and no, this is a thing I never heard of!
I can't imagine, but ask the landlord if they want to shell out the money for it! I am sure it's not something you're supposed to pay in addition!

No it is not necessary. However, you may be contractually obliged.

Check your rental agreement. It has been part of every contract I have had in and around Zurich....

Well, I have to service the machine I have in my apartment several times a year, but I own it and do it myself.

In old machines the old fat would build up under the door bottom, but I think modern 3-in-One tablets work much better and this is a thing of the past. However this being Switzerland, these are still a bit new fangled and many rental contracts have a clause that you must get it cleaned and checked by a professional before the handover, costing about CHF 200,-- !!

It is written into my house contract that I must provide a full service of the dishwasher. It is not a yearly service that is required just one when i move out. I am sure that if i did not provide evidence of this service then my landlord would just do it themselves and charge me plus a little extra for their inconvenience.

The reasoning I was given when I moved into the apartment was that it was good evidence for the new tenant that the dishwasher had been used properly and that a new tenant would not face any issues (for example someone never putting the dishwasher salt in).

So I would recommend checking your contract and seeing what it says - if it does not explicitly state I see no reason to complete any service (which I think you are describing here). If you want to be extra sure then you could ask the landlord (but you might be finding yourself extra costs and work there!).

Re: Is it necessary to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced annually?

Thanks so much for posting all this info on contractual obligations to service domestic appliances. I've been living in my appartment for 3.5 years and had never considered this until now... my washing machine has broken. The door won't open and it won't turn on anymore - I suspect that the fuse has gone although I've no idea how to find or replace it. Any tips on how to navigate out of this or the likely issues I'll have not having had my appliances serviced, greatly appreciated!

Matt

Good luck. I think you gotta call your landlord on that one... hope your clothes don't get stuck in the machine for too long!

Re: Is it necessary to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced annually?

Many contracts state water using appliances (washing machine, washers dryers, condenser dryer, dishwashers and steamers) have to be serviced and certified at the time of hand over, to ensure they are functioning properly and to ensure they are kalk free. If you check you will probably find the certificate enclosed in your home info pack with all the manuals etc from when you moved in. AFAIK, the only exemption from the certificate is if the appliance is more than 10 years old.

I recently had a customer hand over at an apartment, he didn't have the certificates for his appliances (less than 2 years old) and the agent, made another appointment and wouldn't sign off on the place without them.

If a machine breaks down, then that's different, call the agents who will probably send in the caretaker to check it and your fuses, and call a service engineer if needed.... but check your fuse box 1st

Top tip - always use anti kalking tabs in your washing machine and dishwasher, and run the same de-kalker as you would for coffee makers through a steamer, or some white vinegar... but that pongs a bit.

Even topper tip:

When you buy a new property with Zug appliances they send round their rep to make sure you know how to wash clothes etc. We lived in a hard water area and used Calgon (just like on the TV ads). The rep said that with modern detergents (powder or tabs) de-kalker was totally unnecessary and we could bin the rest of the Calgon.

The machine ran for 10 years (as did every other appliance) without any servicing. We moved after that - just in case...

True... to an extent. Many of the top multifunction brands have anti-kalk in them, lots of budget brands don't though, many building now have water softeners installed, but some don't.

If you own the appliance it's up to you, if it comes with an apartment it's someone else's, so 9 chuffs for 60 tabs of Calgon seems a bargain or good bet hedger to me... just sayin

Why?

No it isn't - unless of course you're just trying to make up your number of posts with drivel...

Re: Is it necessary to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced annually?

Coop Prix Garantie Tabs and the Tabs from Aldi are excellent. No smears, and the glasses are very clean.

Why use Calgon, you are throwing your money away, harming the environment. The Calgon adverts border on the criminal by suggesting the machine will leak if not using Calgon. Total rubbish in my view.

I never service it, and for the buildup I use the special cleaners once in a while

Re: Is it necessary to have your dishwasher/washing machine serviced annually?

Minimum maintenance for your machine is to make sure the salt reservoir and liquid for anti-spotting are filled up. Most new machines will indicate when they are low (look at the instructions to see what the codes/symbols are).

Depending if you rinse the plates etc. before putting them in the machine, it is still good to clean the machine 3-4 times a year with this product. It cleans out all of the crud that can build up in the machine. Available in Coop (not sure about Migros).

If you are handing over the apt. be sure to use this product before you do. The machine will be clean and will smell nice.

It is a powder that you put in the machine (empty) and run it for one cycle.

It is the product in the box (three treatments).

Google translate:

Sun Machine Cleaner
Without proper care, fat deposits and limestone accumulated in your dishwasher - especially in areas difficult to access as the filter, piping and spray arm. These deposits can affect the performance of your machine. But today, the new Sun machine cleaner and degrease descales inside your machine to prolong his life. Its format allows three uses 40 g of product. Recommended use: once a month.
