Information on Housing

Hi everyone
I recently was offered a job in Zurich as a Nurse. I will be staying with friends for the first two months. I would like someone to tell me how do I go about applying for a reasonable apartment as my children who are in college in the UK will come over during holidays and some weekends. I am a single parent and would like to know if I would be able to apply for any social housing being that I am an EU citizen. Can anyone tell me about 'co-op' housing?
Thank you

Re: Information on Housing

I don't know quite what you mean by 'social housing'. This isn't the UK and mainly the onus is on the individual to look for solutions to his/her own housing problems.
Sorry if this doesn't sound very helpful and maybe someone has more information. There are lists of housing sites on the sticky at the beginning of this Thread.

By the way, welcome to the forum.

I once drove into manhattan for a few hours just to look at the remains of the wtc. I asked a cabby driving by if he knew of any "reasonably priced parking" and he laughed so hard that he cried.

Re: Information on Housing

Not sure about Zurich, but here in Geneva there is definitely subsidised housing. It is based on income level and size of the family. But as everyone on the EF makes no less than 120,000 chf per year, you may find it difficult to qualify. Also, not sure with children, as to the age and residency requirements, would qualify you or not. From what I've heard, at least in Geneve, it would still be a long shot though, too few subsidised units and waiting lists up to 2 years long. I am guessing that the housing situation is similar in Zurich.

Re: Information on Housing

Here are a couple of links on how to apply for flats, addresses and rulings on some 'social' housing in Zürich, and various addresses.

How to apply for housing.
Baugenossenschaften. (Co-operative building society - a sum of money is paid 'up-front' into a fund and rents are cheaper . Rulings on size of family etc.)
