In a bit of a housing quandry

My husband and I are in a housing quandry. We moved to Geneva three weeks ago, and up until two weeks ago, decided we'd wanted to move to Nyon in Vaud, where I would then commute to Geneva. We'd done our research both before leaving and upon arrival and it seemed great, so we engaged the services of a relocation agent. It was cheaper, it's a nice town and has great transport links.

In the meantime, we found a sublease just outside Founex, a tiny village between Geneva and Nyon, and we've found that being there has made us change our mind about living in Nyon and we now want to live in Geneva. In Geneva there's more to do, better shopping, better links to go travel, closer to work, etc.

So we looked for a sublease in Geneva and found one for CHF2000 a month - right next door to work. It's a brilliant, cosy apartment - perfect for our needs - and would mean I would have the world's shortest commute. We're very keen on it and the person subleasing the apartment sounds keen on us, but she won't make a decision until the end of this week after other people have seen it. So there's no guarantees we'll get it.

In the meantime, relocation agent showed us two places around Nyon, the second of which - a brand new apartment (not ready until March) - we liked and is also CHF2000, but was kind of tainted by the fact of its being in Nyon, where we're no longer sure we want to be. Agent said it would be hard for us to get it, so we said put in paperwork anyway, not really expecting anything. Agent emails today and says apartment is ours if we want it.

Here's the quandry - I know apartments are extremely difficult to get in Geneva/Nyon. So, do we take a chance that we'll get the cosy one we want in Geneva and say no to the new one in Nyon - or grab something that's been offered to us in an area we no longer want to live?

Don't get me wrong, Nyon is a great place - but for us, it's not Geneva. Help! What would you do?

Get the flat in Nyon. Commute is really easy and sometimes sublets are dodgy.

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

I personally wouldnt live right next door to work, so my vote is for the flat in Nyon, which I hear is a lovely place to live. I've been to Geneva and I have to say that I am not as impressed with it as I am with other places around it - like Lausanne. (sorry)

Brand new and you've basically breezed into getting this apartment, unlike the nightmares fellow EFers have posted re the housing situation down here. Why go through unnecessary hassle and stress of "fighting" for an apartment, when transportation is so efficient in Switzerland?

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

Uhmmm....I don't know. If you get the word about the GE apt Friday, I am sure the agent with Nyon apt can wait up till Fri? If you have kids or planning on having them soon, then forget Geneva, it's a major husstle. If you want to have some decent life with culture, bigger city buzz, social life, and professionally you have to socialize, then go for Geneva (since, even Nyon being bigger than Founex, can feel tiny and sleepy). Even though commuting is super easy, the cash for public transport still piles up, even time wise. I always wanted to be in Geneva since it fits withing the activities that are important for me, workwise too, but having a little person around made Nyon a lot more easier, it is much more family friendly.

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

Yeah, as Gata said, be careful of dodgy sublets. Be aware of the terms and the conditons before going further with this. I know too many people found homeless after a sublet, only to find a even more difficult housing market and even higher prices. If your stay here is indefinte, go for the regular apt. in Nyon. If your term here is fixed, and the term matches the sublet, go for the sublet.

Thanks guys for your advice - you all make valid points which makes it harder.

I've managed to stall the agent (apparently I'm in London for the rest of this week - shhh!), so hopefully come Friday we'll have to make a decision or have a decision made for us.

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

whats wrong with Founex ? ( mrs and I, despite my location shown, live in Mies )

personally I^d go for the flat in Nyon... Nyon itself is a nice place, quiet by GE standards both in terms of nightlife and street noise but GE is still an easy commute when you need the noise.

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

Problem is, we're not even in Founex. We're on Rte de Suisse, a 10 min walk away. We're in our 30's, no kids, like to socialise... Founex is a small village. We're not quite compatible. Also we don't have a car - and have no intention of getting one.

I don't mind Nyon, so it's still an option - but I think we prefer to wait and see what happens with Geneva first.

Not sure where the church is, but on the lake side - almost next door to Port de Founex

Oh yeah, we're further towards Nyon than that - almost opposite Rte de Souflettes

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

Having read many posts on forums about some truly awful problems people face with sublets then I would advise anyone in your situation to take the apartment in Nyon.

The whole Geneva/Nyon scenario is really down to you and what you want and need from life. It's a personal choice. We live in Geneva, and I just dont get the attraction of it! I would love to live in Nyon rather than Geneva and I have heard lots of people express the same opinion of Geneva but likewise loads of people love it.

What most people do here is take the flat that they are initially offered and then move to an apartment that they really love/want at a later date.

Nyon is really quite nice and has plenty of shops and life. Sub-lets can be an issue but are quite common in Switzerland, knowing the reason for the sublet is important.

Having read all the posts about Nyon and sublets above there is only one post I am really drawn to.. its yours. See the quotes above and if they are true i can only see one solution for you....

Good luck

Thanks Bruster. I guess your post really highlighted it for me. I guess we would prefer being in Geneva, but we've decided to wait and see what happens with the sublet in Geneva. If we get it, great; if not, then we'll take the apartment in Nyon. I wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up in Nyon - in fact relieved, that after only 3 weeks we've found something. Nyon is hardly Founex and as others rightly pointed out, it's not hard to get to Geneva if we want.

I keep forgetting that in Perth I lived only 10kms away from the city and yet some mornings it was still a 45min commute door to door; Nyon is more than double that distance from Geneva and yet I can be there in 15mins. I guess I just need a little perspective.

I'll let you all know what happens! Watch this space. And thanks for all your advice.

Re: In a bit of a housing quandry

So, an update - we didn't hear back about the sublease (were supposed to hear by Sat at the latest), so the decision is made for us - we're going for the new apartment in Nyon.

Only downside - 3 months' rent deposit. Ouch! Just hope the regie is kind enough to accept SwissCaution...

At least we have a place now - I hope!

In my experience they do accept. And, 3mo advance is standard here. Welcome in the area.
