Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

Is this normal? In the States this would be considered an emergency and someone would be over right away.

Our electricity is completely out just in the kitchen, all of our things in the fridge & freezer are going bad and we are unable to cook.

I'm most upset about all of our food going to waste. Meat is not cheap here!! If I owned the place I would pay for someone to come over right away, but since I don't I'm at the mercy of the landlord. Frustrating.

If it's only out in the kitchen sounds like one of your fuses has tripped. If you can't re-set it yourself why not run an extension from a socket that is still working to your fridge?

As my mother tongue is not English, I hope I choose the right words.

Do you know were your fuse box is? It sounds like it is something you can fix yourself. You can either change the fuse or if you live in a modern house, switch it on again.

...this seems to be pretty normal behavior here in Switzerland. I know somebody who was out of electricity for 3 days before anybody even bothered to come over and take a look at the issue.
On the other hand, did you try the fuse box...usually there is is a switch that turns off in case of a circuit overload...

Re: Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

Defnitely sounds like a tripped breaker. (or a fuse if you live in an ancient house).

I trip my (one) breaker almost every morning if I don't follow the correct order of unplugging my phone, starting the PC then throwing toast in the toaster.

The breaker box was in a common area, and used to be a pain to find someone to unlock it and reset the breaker, luckily now I have the right tool to open up the box as required

Re: Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

Thanks for your advice!!

Where is this fuse/breaker box? I always had one in my apartment in the places I've lived, but there isn't one in this apartment. My building is from the 40's so it is a bit old, but not ancient. When the electricity first went out this is what I immediately thought to do...but didn't know where to go.

I would plug the fridge into another outlet, but that's not possible since it's built into the wall and there are no other outlets within reach.

Thank-you!

In older places I've lived it's been on the landing outside the apartment. Sometimes it's exposed, sometimes hidden away but should be easy to find.

Re: Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

I think the easiest way to find out is by asking a neighbour.

German translation for "Where is the fuse box?"
Können Sie mir sagen, wo sich der Sicherungskasten befindet?

If they ask you why, tell them you have no power in the kitchen.
German: Ich habe keinen Strom mehr in der Küche.

Re: Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

Mud beat me to it but the place where mrs G and I live now the fuse box is outside in a little shed attached to our house.
and the first time I blew a fuse ( so to speak ) and went and asked our landlords mother ( !!! ) if she knew where the key was for the fuse box

she came back with one of these...

best advice... go looking... it really sounds like a circuit breaker has popped or a fuse has blown

Where is this fuse/breaker box?
Ours is in the entrance closet (closest to the wall - but I guess that's obvious).

OK...thanks all. I feel a little incompetent that I didn't do this before. Due to your advice I went looking about and found a breaker box in a common area & flipped the one that looked off & it worked. Just needed a couple cups of coffee to get the wheels turning. I really wish I could be a do it yourself gal more often.

YAY!!

Re: Landlord Won't Come Till Tomorrow for Electricity Outage in Kitchen

Is your building a proper apartment block, or an old single-family house that's been carved up into flats? If the former, you should definitely have your own fusebox and it is probably somewhere near your front door (either inside or outside). If the latter, there may be only one for the whole house, and your guess is as good as mine where it is! Try common areas first (the stairs, the cellar) and if you still don't find it, ring your neighbor's doorbell and ask if he's got it.

edit: Too slow - you've got it already. Well done!!

Good! Keep in mind it tripped for a reason- usually in a kitchen you might have too many high wattage things going at once, but if it trips again and you haven't got the kettle and microwave going call someone.

My guess is he's under 30? (Kids these days don't know how to fix anything!)

I resent that! I can fix everything (and still under 30 for another month :P )

... all of the above and next time stock on candles as well. They seem to be pretty useful in times of power blackouts or any kind of outages. We know it from SA because ESKOM (local provider) used to surprise us a lot.

BTW: Colourful set of candles can be a perfect idea for Valentine's present. If anything fails try to make it up for by creating a romantic atmosphere ande this always works.
