tipping the movers?

The movers are coming tomorrow with our shipment of furniture and belongings from Japan. I want to know if I should tip them and if so, how much.

Japan was not a tipping culture but we were so grateful that they packed all our junk for us...60 total items (boxes and furniture) that we gave them all envelopes (containing approx 30chf for each of the 4 people).

We live on the first floor with no elevators. I'm not sure if they are expected to remove the packaging around the furniture (couch, table, etc.) and reassemble them for us. What is standard service for this kind of thing?

thanks for any advice!

Terms of service on delivery should be in the contract. Normally limited to placement, with assembly if it was dis-assembled at the departure site. They should remove all the rubbish.

Should they go the extra mile and they do all all the extras with a smile, then tipping is perfectly acceptable, and to be encouraged where good service is seen. I tipped my UK crew £75 , two people , 2 hours. They were quite happy with this. If you are unsure, and need things doing that you suspect they won't do, then let them know there is a tip at the end. This will avoid confusion and disappointment. It will not demean anyone. We all work for money, getting extra money is great.

Do not tip if there are any damages, (excluding breakages in transit) as tipping can be construed as being happy with the service.

Re: tipping the movers?

I always supply some lunch for movers - just some sandwiches, fruit, drinks etc and give them tea/cofee as they always seem to underestimate the time taken for the job.
So if they are happy they do go the extra mile - my last lot were hours later than they should have been and when they left I gave them all a good tip - they then stayed longer and helped me unpack !!

Re: tipping the movers?

We tipped our three removals guys about 150 CHF in total, as well as feeding them both here and in the UK.

No idea what is a good or bad tip, but it's a job I would hate to do, so I was happy to show our appreciation with a little extra.

Every time I have tried to tip outside of a restaurant they have tried to say no.

But I tipped our movers because they were fast and very good. I tipped our cleaners because they were helpful way beyond the contractual obligations.
I tipped one of our daughter's teachers at the end of the school year as she was brilliant.

Two out of the three tried to refuse saying that they were already being paid and it was their job. I smiled and said yes I know but I am an American and I reward people who go the extra mile when they don't have to do so.

Switzerland is not a tipping culture. Having said that, do what you feel comfortable doing.

Re: tipping the movers?

There were three movers and they unpacked half our boxes and assembled our furniture. We didn't even ask for it! The whole process took only 2 hours. We ended up giving them 100chf for the team. We felt bad for owning so many books.

Thanks everyone for the last minute advice!
