Landlord and rights query

Hi,
Iīm new to all this so hello to all and I hope someone can help with my query. Basically Iīve moved out of my apartment, all the furniture is gone and it is in the middle of being professionally cleaned. I have paid in advance up to the end of the month - the way it worked out after having to give 4 months notice. My landlord phones me and says he wants a Renovations needs meeting so I worry about it all day then go there. He speaks no English and my German isnīt great but as far as I understood he goes on and on that I donīt have to wait and can have the give back meeting asap then people appear and he starts showing them round. It seems this meeting was basically just to get me round so he could do a showing which Iīm sure isnīt right. Just because my stuff isnīt there any more, itīs still mine because Iīm still paying. Right???? Anyway the giveback meeting is set for the 23rd but Iīve paid till the 31st. Is it worth asking for a weekīs rent refund and what rights do I have??
If anyone could help, that would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Landlord and rights query

Hello, welcome (have you thought about posting a real introduction?). From the landlords point of view it makes sense to show people round the apartment if it is empty as he can then minimise the time between you moving out and the next tenant moving in. However, he should have informed you of this reason and not tried a 'faux' renovation meeting (are you sure there was no language realted mix up here?).

I don't rate your chances of getting a weeks rent back. Maybe by showing goodwill and surrendering your apartment a week early he may look more favourable on the apartment condition (are there any issues with recieving your full deposit back?) of course this would depend on how much you trust him and if you could discuss this to a good level of understanding

Re: Landlord and rights query

Thanks for the reply. What you said does make sense but I was just soooo cross. He didnīt mention anything broken or whatever and we are having it cleaned properly - i.e not me doing it !!! So I donīt think we should have a problem getting the deposit back. I donīt trust him at all and he should have said he wanted to show people round - that wasnīt a language mix up because it was an email and my reading German is reasonable, better than listening!! It would be easier to just let him have the keys early I suppose but it does feel unfair.
How do you go about doing a proper introduction then? is it like īShow and Tell`?
Thanks again

Yes, perhaps he should've said, "I want to show someone round" but in the end, you have moved all of your stuff out and cleaned the place - I'd do handover as quickly as possible and move on.

Re: Landlord and rights query

Personally, I think there is a huge lack of communication here. So, perhaps he said he wanted to check for damage AND show someone around.... then all that stuff he was tell you that you didn't understand was actually about that damage (or maybe that there wasn't any damage?).

If the give back is the 23rd that doesn't mean the new tenant will move in the 23rd. They probably will move in on the 1st. The landlord may want to fix/change somethings & have the time to do it between tenants.

Anyway, I agree with Lob on this one: Do the hand over ASAP & move on.

(Oh & hello! )
