Re: Why so few ads for apartment rents in Geneva ?

Yes, can't wait- how much will they talk about 'copinage, 'pots de vins sous la table' etc. (copinage = favouring friends/old friends network. Pots de vins sous la table = bribes under the table).

Tweener - You are taking the words right out of my mouth. And above it all, I guess very few of you even have a remote idea of what is happening in neighboring France: The locals are getting squeezed out by the Genevois (who get squeezed out of their canton) at breathtaking speed. Within 6 years house prices have gone up 100%. If you are not a frontalier, you only have two options left: Pray for social housing (even if you have a respectable income - but in €) or leave you home region. And all of this is happening besides France building like hell.

This being France, I'm pretty sure that within a very short time we will end up with Swiss-registered cars (or houses) burning and/or a majority for Front National.

Thank you greedy Swiss "elite" for turning a wonderful region into a nightmare.

Re: Why so few ads for apartment rents in Geneva ?

The programme the other day was about a developer who is building 255 appartments in one big park in Cologny. Because the town of GE wants more flats built- these will have a special subsidy and will be therefore half the normal market price. The cheapest will be CHF600, and the most expensive 1mio600- way below normal value. Because of this subsidy, future owners will not be able to sell for profit before 10 years. So will these apartments go to your ordinary family in GE? All 255 apartments have been sold withing weeks of the project taking shape- all by word of month, business contacts, etc. Not a single advert or public communication was made. The ex Maire of Cologny was given an option on buying 2 for his help with the project. Oh yeah.

Don't forget to watch InfraRouge tonight - a big debate on the GE/Leman housing crisis at 20.20.

I watched that show and was very shocked by one thing (which suprisingly was not the focus of the report). hint: corruption

Basically, they interviewed this one prominent politician who was given the possibility to buy appartments well below market prices. He is also a lawyer, so quite rich i assume.
Anyway, the reporter asked him if it was normal that he was offered the possibility to buy below market prices (I'll add that the prices are limited by the canton, not by the developpers themselves).

His Answer?
"we live in a free market country and a developer should be able to sell to whoever he choses"

Was I the only one extremely shocked by his answer (again, the reporter did not try to confront him or anything)
What he failed to mention was
- The prices are low because the canton would like these apartments to go to the middle class, not some rich lawyer.
- Yes, theoretically a seller should be able to chose to sell to whoever he wants. But doesn't the fact that the developer chose a buyer that just so happens a prominent politician seem a bit suspicious? this is borderline corruption if you ask me.

Obviously, if the prices weren't regulated, he would have had a valid point and there wouldn't be anything shocking about all this.

But that's how Swiss politics go. Switzerland is actually one of the most corrupt countries in the world. And by corrupt, I don't mean that you have to bribe a government official for a passport (obviously, switzerland is not corrupt in this respect). But for example, how political parties are financed is not public information (In most democratic countries political parties have to tell the public where the money comes from).

So before people start blaming ex-pats or foreigners, i really hope they blame politicians first. The whole situation is unacceptable and mainly their fault.
