We are just in the process of switching from UBS to PostFinance for our mortgage. I have found them very helpful and friendly.

We are on 3M LIBOR with PostFinance, and the rate is 1.1% (you can find all the rates on their website). With UBS, the rates they quote on the website are much higher (the latest rate we were paying was 1.22%, so a nice saving from the switch), but then it seems everyone gets a discount so it is hard to compare - PostFinance is very simple, nothing flashy, but what you see is what you get, which I like.

If you want a contact at PostFinance in Geneva I can send you the details of the person I have been dealing with based at the big Poste at Cornavin. Just send me a PM.
I would say 1.1% is a very good rate, Credit Swiss is 1.47% on their website. we are not even thinking of UBS since nobody is recommending it. Postfiance, maybe, since we have accounts in their bank.

Just to echo what has been written re. mortgages.

The mortgage on our current house was taken out 14 yrs. ago with a relatively small Swiss national bank. A few years ago this bank (chain) was taken over (bought out) by a slightly larger (and getting bigger) Swiss national bank. Nothing has really changed other than we were offered a lower fixed rate for a minimum fixed period, with the new bank - which still has a few years to run if penalties are to be avoided if we decide to sell up.

Now we are having a new house built and we were offered the best rates and terms with our local Kantonal bank. They seem less faceless than the bigger banks and seem to genuinely want to help the local people become home owners (still not as common here as other countries) and offer a better personal service as well as the better rates.
It seems to me Cantonal Bank is one of the best choices, a lot of people had recommended it. And even finance agent. I have a question, are you contact those banks yourself or through a bank agent? Although they don't charge any fees (they got commission from banks)?

Re: Please help_buying a house in Vernier Geneva

I just read an article in french, about the Vernier's Tanks

A study that was made, in february, states the tanks are an acceptable risk for the population.

It says that if they were going to explode, due to a leak of oil, there could have a loss of 10 % of human life in a 90 metres area. That would do 450 deads in the most optimistic scenario...

A magistrate of Vernier, in charge of the problem will ask that Petrostock, the owner of the tanks, cease its activities there.

It's up now to the cantonal authorities....

Thanks for the article. We saw those tanks when we drove by one day, and I was doubting why this ridiculous project can be approved. Yes, of couse they are dangrous (HSBC has a nice new building next to it now), plus, the tanks are so ugly standing in the big cross road. I hope that the cantonal authorities will remove them although a huge money is going to be involved...

those tanks are a good example of Geneva's difficulty to expand, several years ago, they were in the middle of nowhere....

These tanks are merely an example of the cantonal authorities' chronic incapacity to planify things proactively.

Obviously, it is sooo much easier to attract companies with tax presents and then let FR (and a bit VD) clean up the mess in terms of housing...
