Unfurnished better than furnished in Basel?

Hi guys,

Second posting, be gentle!

I wanted to ask the experience and opinion of those who have moved in to furnished or furnished apartments fresh from relocating to Switzerland.

Has it worked out in the long term? I get the impression resale of furniture isn't easy in CH in general and thus is it worth the outlay for a potential 2 year stay if I have to give the furniture away at the end of the period for lack of buyers?

The monthly rental between furnished and unfurnished seems to be significantly higher (for furnished) - thus a difficult choice.

I guess one question could be whether you are prepared to live on someone elses furniture (mattress etc)!?

My stay could last longer than 2 years however this is unknown at the present time.

Doesn't seem to be much about this in general on the forum, at least in much detail.

Your thoughts are as always valued.

Many thanks,

Stu

Re: Unfurnished better than furnised in Basel?

I had a similar thought when I first arrived. I decided if I was going to be here a year or more it would be cheaper to buy furniture from Ikea, including car/van hire to get it, than to rent furnished. That included the total cost, so expecting nothing for resale at the end.

Plus there is so much more choice of unfurnished apartments.

As you're planning to be here two years, unfurnished is definitely the way to go. Furniture from Ikea is cheap. My mattress was about 700 CHF (they do have much cheaper ones of course) but everything else was very little.

Hi Stu, unfurnished is better if you're staying here for two years, IKEA or FLY or conforama is very cheap. Plus if you look on EF regularly, you can get many good deals from people leaving CH for good. Good luck!

Like the others said, I reached the same conclusion.
Also depends on how much and how quickly you want to make your home comfortable, since it takes time, money and a lot of trips to IKEA to fill up the home.

you can buy cheap furniture from IKEA for a minimalist bedroom and a living room for about chf 1500, that's pretty cheap. plus look on EF for good "desperate to to get rid of furniture" threads
