Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Why do people ask for advice only to take the piss out of others when they're not told what they want to hear?

Tell you what OP, take the job. It's a great base salary, and I've no doubt that the promised commission will be a breeze to achieve. You'll have no problems covering basic bills, plus all the additional costs involved in setting up home in CH. At no point will you find yourself getting deeper and deeper into debt.

That do ya?

my manager (to be) has also assured me that i will gain any support necessary whilst in switzerland.
This concerns me... does your manager (to be) mean that the company will give you any support necessary while in Switzerland, or is he thinking that you can get 'any support necessary' from the state? Because (speaking from experience) there are certain conditions that you have to meet before you can get benefits... I wouldn't count on the state supporting you if it all goes pear-shaped.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

UPDATE:

i have spoken to a former employee of the company and he has informed me that a financial co-ordinator earns around CH4500 monthly. he himself would earn around 6.5-7K because he was good at his job.

does this sound like a better salary in basel?

If you can't do the maths I'm not sure financial selling is for you. 4,500chf pcm = 54,000chf per month.

That is not a high salary. Comparis.ch will give you an idea of how much your deductions would be. Homegate.ch will give you an idea of how much rent will be.

The cost of living in Switzerland is higher - but is counter balanced by the lower tax at that income level. But make your decisions on the historical rate of 2chf to GBP rather than the current 1.5.

Did he say why he was a former employee? Just out of interest...

People have given you a lot of information already, I don't want to be rude, but why don't you read what they have written... it seems to me that you have some of the information to make that decision about if this is a 'better salary' in this thread.

Have a look at http://www.homegate.ch/en for properties, and http://en.comparis.ch/ for health insurance.

Then remember that you will need (I presume) telephone and internet, and possibly TV. Then you will (if you have the internet) have to pay Billag at least for the radio, plus extra if you want a TV. You will also need to pay for contents insurance (and you will need to have proof of this before you can rent a flat), and public liability insurance. Then there is insurance against fire and other natural disasters (the bill will just arrive one day). Then there are your travel costs to think about. And, as someone else has said, you need your deposit for an apartment (3 months rent). Then remember that even with your health insurance you will still have to pay a franchise before the insurance kicks in (and the lower the premium, the higher the franchise), and even when you've gone through the franchise you still have to pay 10%. Dental care is not covered unless you pay extra, the care is expensive and even if you have insurance the company may try to avoid paying. Eye care is also not covered by insurance and there is no equivalent of NHS vouchers, so if you happen to wear glasses expect a big bill once every few years.

Then there's food costs...

Is it enough? I don't know. Yes, I live on less, but as someone said I'm 'borderline poverty'. Put it this way, I am currently worrying about what to do if I have to have new glasses next time I get my eyes tested - because I can't afford to buy them. Hardly a luxury item...

I'd do a bit more research. Search the internet and the forum and make your own decision...

But if you come along in a few months time like this person be prepared for some comments along the lines of 'we told you so!'

Edit: I see someone else came along while I was typing this essay and replied in a similar vein... never mind, I want to put in my two centimes!

It's better than 2000 a month, but it's still very much at the bottom end. If you compared it to a salary in Birmingham, that would be something like 15 000 a year. Sure, lots of people live on that (and less), but would they move to Birmingham to do so?

I was always under the impression that jobs in finance were well paid.

SO, does anyone have any idea of the monthly rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in basel. nothing luxury, just to get by
The job might be OK if the basic was Fr 4,000 per month, 99 apartments here in Basel under Fr 1,000

I wouldn't be so cocky, if I were you, old chap. The office might be "fully equiped", but that doesn't mean you'll be able to use their computers to look at laughing babies on Youtube.

If you take this job, you will be shafted. These people are cowboys. The salary they are offering you is an insult.

But you obviously know better than those of us who live here, so go ahead and apply for it.

I hope you like crackers and water.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

This is the recruiter right?
http://www.totaljobs.com/JobSearch/J...JobId=50209998

The same guy does also recruit candidates in Ireland for the same vacancy, and it seems the offered package there is quite a bit better.

http://www.irishjobs.ie/Jobs/Sales-C...d-6434396.aspx

The base salary is CHF 26 - 40K + paid accommodation.

I agree any job is better than being unemployed and having to ask for benefits - so kudos for that, and your intention to move abroad to have some work.
But as everyone has said here it will be very though in Switzerland to survive on the currently offered package... so have another conversation with this recruiter and make it clear he has to top up your package.

If they decline; well if the company is so cash-poor, then it wouldn't give me much confidence in them.

Yes there are flats for CHF 700, which will leave you with 1300 remaining for utilities, health care, food, travel pass which is really almost impossible to survive on.
(People on this thread area really trying to help you, so please take those advices. )

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

so what your trying to say is even if im on 4,500 CH per month it wouldnt be enough.......is switzerland made out of gold or what ?

are you trying to say it was all a bed of roses when you first arrived, i assume not.

look guyz, i appreciate your comments (most of them anyway!) and i know its going to be tough but i know what im like. im definately not a heavy spender and i dont drink and buy expensive designer clothing. maybe ill make a good saving.

the company is putting me up in a hotel type accommodation when i first arrive for a week. i am told that most people end up renting in this hotel type place because its cheaper than renting and so they can pocket the rest of the CH600 i mentioned earlier

i do like my telly though.....i might have a chat with the recruiter.

We'll see who the idiot is if you accept this job.

Why bother to ask for advice on the forum if you are going to insult those who are telling you the plain truth?

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

You can do it but the "can" depends on loads of factors.

I made a decision to live on quite a bit less than that amount. I'm super comfortable and will be paying off a 25-year mortgage in only a few years based on my spending habits.

I eat super well, have a gym pass, walk to work and I'm in a shared flat. I don't drink. I eat out once a week and most social stuff involves walks, picnics or maybe a movie.

Invest in a gym pass and nutritious foods, then choose a health insurance plan with the highest deductible if you're confident you won't visit the doctor too often.
