Re: Rent query

Think you'll need at least double that per month over all to be comfortable, so hopefully those commissions are reliable.

Welcome to the Forum. Just above where your question is posted in the Forum, there is a 'box' which says
FAQs - you SURE your question/problem/requirement is unique? Look here before asking

In Switzerland the question is less 'what does an apartment to rent cost?' but 'what apartments are available for the price I can pay?'

Have a look at the housing sites and see what you find there.

It appears to be almost equivalent to Social Security in CH ie bordering on poverty.

a point to note is that the company agrees to pay 50% of the monthly rent and travel costs.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

More than half your base salary without the bills included, nor the health insurance, food, and basic stuff.
I would read all the relevant posts on this forum before even thinking of signing on any dotted line.
Something doesn't add up.
I wouldn't rely on commision to pay my way in Switzerland.

What do I think? I think the company is having a laugh, and you may tell them I said so.

Do NOT take this job if you want a "comfortable lifestyle". Yes, you can survive on that much, but you will either (a) live a very frugal 'student' lifestyle, including sharing a flat - or (b) live in a horrible rundown tower block surrounded by drug dealers. Either way, a company ski trip once a year is likely to be poor compensation.

As a point of reference: unskilled casual labor (e.g. a teenage babysitter or a student hired to move books around in the library one afternoon a week) gets CHF17-25 an hour. A good cleaning lady gets CHF25-35. At 42 hours a week, 47 weeks a year... well, you do the math.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Welcome.

The others are right. Basel is an expensive place BUT if you consider living just over the border in France then it MAY be do-able ! You should expect at least double that for a start and trying to live on commission will cripple you. It costs 3 times as much for a pint for a start lol
Come visit for a weekend to see for yourself.
Look at www.home.ch or www.homegate.ch etc for an idea of rental prices.
Hope this helps a little and good luck

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Social security in CH does pay up to 100% of the rental costs ( conditions apply ), but all this is OT to this thread, including the viability of your "package" for an FC. ( start another thread under Employment should you wish to take it further eg. Swiss firm / Swiss laws apply / jurisdiction etc. )

Coming back to the topic of this thread, here is a good link for you in EN to gauge what is available for a given budget - adjust the parameters.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Don't take the job offer. It's not an offer, but rather there's a catch behind it.

Work on such a commission means basically the company has calculated that you do not get enough clients, as such they don't have to pay the agreed commission.

Have you thought were the clients are you need to find for the company?

Re financial services there are many reputable companies e.g. banks, family offices, financial advisers.

If your company is really that reputable it would have offered you a better package that is more suitable for the living condition in Switzerland.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

The base salary sounds really low. A friend of mine was offered that rate for a 3-month internship (student-position).

I agree with the others. There is something not right about this.

Kash.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

It sounds like one of those insurance sales jobs, that in the UK you would be paid commission only with OTE £60K +. Most of those people stay in the business less than 6 months as there earnings in most months are Zero. They sell to friends & family..........

Be aware that your commission will be subject to clawback if the person fails to keep up the policy for 2 years.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Sorry mate but bloody hell that's a low salary, our outgoings for 2 are 1800 rent, 500 health ins and 500 for food, and that's breadline and doesn't even include heating water electric etc...!

My partner works in a hotel and she's on twice that salary, I get paid to watch people hit golf balls and I'm on 4 times that, and we're counting the pennies!

Good luck btw a 1 bedroom apartment I'd say between 1000 and 1400 chf cold.

Re: Rent query - how much for a 1 BR flat in Basel ?

Just seen you're from Brum, me too. In that case I'd take the offer (just to get out of that hole)!

If you find a houseshare you might get a room for 6-800 a month half gets paid by the company right?

So after bills, food, health ins etc.. you might be able to afford a curry at the end of each month. Not as good as the Brum ones though ;-)
