Finding a furnished studio/ 1 bed in Basel/ Basle

Hi

As I just narrowly escaped being fleeced by African fraudsters operating on Craiglist (see Craiglist thread on Basel/ Basle on the subject).

Would any trustworthy poster out there who is in Basel give me some pointers on how to secure a furnished studio/ 1 deb appt in Basel at short notice.

I need to arrange something in a matter of days rather than weeks. Ideally private rent would be better than through an estate agent.

Malcolm

Re: Finding a furnished studio/ 1 bed in Basel/ Basle

for furnished 1 bed/ studios the rate through agents appears to be around the 1300 CHF pm mark - with really dingy looking places available in the 800-1000 CFH pm mark.

Do forum members recommend renting privately? is this a cheaper option or are rates the same going privately?

Unless you plan on keeping the apartment for years, you really need to rent something on a fixed term contract, serviced. In Zurich this was about 2000 per month when I last looked. There are large costs associated with moving in and out of apartments here. Cleaning (1000chf+ no joke), termination points every quater, security deposits, etc. Just make sure this is a serviced, no cleaning on move out, no deposit type contract, unless you are here longer term.

People offering these short term lets usually speak English.

Re: Finding a furnished studio/ 1 bed in Basel/ Basle

Here is the 'acceptance' email I received from one of the scam 'landlords' Jimmy Smith who's ad I originally answered on Craiglist:

" Hello Mr Malcolm, Thanks for the Details i'm very satisfied with your profile,i want you to be informed that i have contact DHLcourier office for the delivering, It has been verified and approved at the DHL office ,keys/documents will be deliver to you via DHL courier service to the address you provided below ... in next working day, Please i want you to take good care of the apartment.

Here are the contents that will be delivered to you via DHL courier service.

1) The house documentary file.
2) Entrance and the rooms Keys
3) Payment Receipt
4) Paper/Permanent house form (Containing your reference details)

N:B Once more important i will need payment confirmation of A Rent with security Deposit over to me here in south african, Via international money Transfer i.e Western Union or Money Gram before i can send the Keys/Papers to the apartment over to you,let me know which one that would be convenient for you so that i can get back to with the payment information, and as soon as payment confirmed i will instruct DHL to procced with shipping.

Thanks My Regards

Mr Smith. "

Here is the response I got from another one (or the same?) going by the name of Engr Jones

" Hello Malcolm,

Thanks for the mail, Attached is the signed contract. Kindly print it out, sign it and have it scanned back to me. I am also happy to have your current address with me as i will post down the keys to your address via DHL express courier service (overnight delivery) as soon as i confirm your payment today.

Below is my information needed to make the payment to me via western union:

Name: James Van K Woodward
Address: 3 Victoria road, Brighton, UK.

Kindly get back to me with the senders name, senders address, and the 10 digits MTCN( money transfer control number). You can also send me a scanned copy of the payment receipt from western union and your passport.. Once i get the information from you today, i will go ahead with the posting of the keys today and also send you the shipment code . I wish you a very happy stay in my apartment.

I shall be waiting for the signed copy of the contract and that of the payment receipt from western union.

Regards
Engr James."

This was an interesting one as the 'rental contract' did not specify himself as the landlord but a James Van K Woodward. There was even a scan of a Dutch passport (probably stolen) in the name James Van K Woodward ( a white middle-aged man) who's details I was supposed to supply to Western Union.

It bothers me that these people can conduct these scams with impunity - all he got from me was some sharp remark - but what he should have got is a custodial sentence for attempting to embezzle money out of people under false pretexts.

Being Dutch, I can confirm that this is the worst attempt to create a fake Dutch-sounding name ever.

Re: Finding a furnished studio/ 1 bed in Basel/ Basle

For future reference to ANYONE on the planet Earth:

DHL DO NOT PROVIDE KEY/HANDOVER SERVICE TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS.

A friend of mine was one of the first in CH to discover this scam and reported it to DHL in Zurich. Since then the number of scammers using this "DHL method" has explodes so they can barely track them all.

The ONLY way of getting keys to an apartment in CH (the right way) is a) paying a rental deposit into a JOINT account signed by BOTH parties at a SWISS bank, b) showing up at the apartment itself during normal working hours and c) doing an inspection with the owner/manager and tenant, filling out the forms for damages etc. and d) BOTH parties signing and dating these forms.

This is the way things are done. Anything else you should be suspicious about immediately
