Short term accommodation in Zurich - Advice and Sites only!

Hi,

The company doesn't offer any relocation/accommodation assistance so I'll have to take care of this myself.

I was thinking of first renting a room somewhere for a week or two (maybe even in a hotel) while I would be looking for a flat. The thing is that that flat I'll be looking for would be for a relatively short term lease, too. I'll be leaving alone for the first several months before bringing my family over so I guess I would need a flat for half a year maximum. After that I'm planning to find an appropriate family place.

But for now my two concerns are:
1) Where is the cheapest option to stay for a few days or, in the worst case, weeks while searching for a one room flat for myself?
2) Is it sensible to expect to quickly find such a one room flat for, say, 6 months (definitely less than a year)?

What options do I have here?

Thanks a million

Re: Short term accommodation in Zurich

Perhaps you could rent a room in somebody's flat rather than look for a studio for such a short time? Look and see if anyone on the forum is offering one. Moving in and out of a regular non-furnished is a lot of hassle for such a short time and it would be difficult to get a place for just six months, unless it was a sublet or house-sitting for someone going away for six months-which does happen quite a bit. Those type of arrangements may not be easy to sort out in advance though, so you may need to look at staying in a hotel or hostal for the first few days/weeks.
But once here you may need to start searching for your family orietated home as it can take a while to get the right place.
Things move quite slowly and are planned well in advance, sometimes, unbelievably so.

Re: Short term accommodation in Zurich

I am staying in hostel of Kinderspital here. Unfortunately I don't know how to apply online, as the secretary of my professor did that for me. But you can definitely make a phone call to figure that out.

I pay 510 Fr. per month for a 12 m2 room. Kitchen and bathroom are shared and you will have to find someone to share wireless internet with. So, these are disadvantages.

Yet, it's cheap for Zurich and you can just tell them 2 months in advance the date that you're moving out. Most importantly, you don't have to be a student to make use of such place.

The OP is asking for help and advice as to the best course of action in his situation. If he wants to post an Ad in the Market Place to say he is looking for a flat, he can do so. If you wish to offer him a flat then you can do so by PM, but please do not treat his Thread as a Flat search.

Mabern, fbuyukkececi and OCMA - thanks for suggestions
Longbyt - thanks for clarifications and some pruning

Yes, I'm not actually looking for a flat at the moment (though I don't mind if I can somehow manage it), just basically looking for information. In fact, I'm not even sure about the price level, so that's what I'm trying to figure out first.

Checked a few furnished apartments for short let and it looks like CHF2000 for 1 room is a norm. Pretty steep. Then checked homegate and there are much better prices over there but they don't mention the minimum term so I suppose there could be issue with short leases.

I'm actually not quite prepared to share kitchen or bathroom. Moreover, I also want to have a washing machine inside the flat itself which seems another big challenge. I don't need much space or furniture or high level of confort but I do need privacy.

of course the price depends of the area, Kreis 1 and 2 are the most expensive (also kreis 8)Where will you be working? Oerlikon is a good option, it's not as expensive as Zürich centre and it's very well connected (specially to go to airport).

I don't know where are you looking at but 2000 for one room seems very expensive, even furnished. The shorter the term the more expensive they are, specially for executives.

I fully understand about the kitchen and the bathroom, but regarding the washing machine, it's very (veeery) common to shere with the rest of the neighbours. In the first flat I arrived to Zurich there was a chip charged with money and every use discharged some money from it (you recharge it when empty). In the one I am now it's included in the community expenses. So, i know it is annoying sometimes but it's very common, so don't get surprised.

Re: Short term accommodation in Zurich - Advice and Sites only!

Ok, I think I'll be working near Letzigrund so Kreis 9 and, perhaps, 3, 4 and 5 will do. I want to find something within a walking distance to work.

The below sites gave me the impression a 1 bed furnished flat would cost around CHF 2000 for a short term.

http://www.aw-immo.ch
http://www.cityappartements.ch
http://www.apartments-swiss-star.ch

But I do think it's a bit too much so I'd be happy to find something below that price level

OCMA, your apartment looks great (http://www.englishforum.ch/adverts-p...ay-2011-a.html) but it's a bit too big and expensive for me. It's probably worth it but as I'm planning to be living alone for the first time, I don't need that much space for myself. I would definitely consider it when my family comes but for now I'll be looking for smaller and cheaper options. And for a shorter period as you're probably looking for long commitments.

I actually didn't know that it's not the right place for discussing accommodation so I'm going to move to the Adverts section to do that

By the way, I suspect the only serious alternative for short term leases to the above sites is http://www.marktplatz.uzh.ch/wohnungen/. Well, perhaps, the Adverts section here is also helpful but, as I said, I have overlooked it somehow That was a mistake on my part so I'm going to browse it now

Hi, Could you please give me more details for your hostel? I am looking for 2 months accommodation in August, September for myself. This sounds like a place that suits me as well. Thanks a bunch in advance

Can someone tell me how far Grünhalde is from Glattpark?
Is there any transportation available between these two places?
I need to travel to a place near Lindbergh-Allee 1. Are there any Metro stations or connectivity from and to this place?

I've been receiving messages about contact details of Kinderspital. Here you can find the contact information:

Hi, I think I will stay in hostel Kinderspital (it is not definite yet). How is the environment? How many people are sharing the wc/bathroom? How is the kitchen? Is there a balcony? Any information could be helpful. Thanks. (By the way I am from Turkey too)

In my humble opinion I think it is a great deal if you manage to get the Kinderspital offer. Looking for an apartment in Zurich can be very time costly and energy consuming. Once you start applying you will notice how fast your expectations will decrease, unfortunately.

If you want a place one room apartment for yourself the standard cost is around 1200 CHF/month. A two room apartment around 2000 CHF/month.

Pay super caution to online scams. Because there are so many people looking. Under no circumstances give any money before you saw the apartment.

Re: Short term accommodation in Zurich - Advice and Sites only!

Thanks!!! Yes I found out how expensive it is. I wanted to learn how many people are sharing the bathroom/wc, kitchen etc. However, I still need some privacy. I can suggest
http://www.empa.ch/plugin/template/e.../lartid=130944.
This is a guesthouse and ETH guests have priority. 1 single room is around CHF 1000.

Additionally, I have e-mailed the landlord or landlady of the apartment below several times and I am quite sure he/she is a cheater. Everyone, please be careful! Don't pay any deposit.
