Buying Furniture - Valais/Vaud

Does anyone know of any good furniture showrooms, ideally around Sierre/Sion?

I`m furnishing a new holiday apartment soon, and planning a trip to buy furniture. So far, i`ve only sourced the obvious ones, like IKEA. I`ve heard though that their furniture may not be a wise choice if being used at altitude....any local views on that would also be appreciated.

I just spent a few days in Crans-Montana and noticed there were several furniture shops up there. If you like antiques or handmade wooden furniture (country style) you will be well served there. Things do tend to be quite expensive, but they cater to holiday residences and are probably high quality.

We got several items of furniture from IKEA and it's lasted very well and we've been here 18 years. As for altitude affecting it, that's a new one on me ! Not heard that before.

Good day

I am not sure if you will be interested in buying furniture that has been used. I bought it last August/September and have now decided to leave the country. Please let me know if you will be keen on this. I am in Fribourg.

Re: Buying Furniture - Valais/Vaud

A couple of ideas.

One of the biggest (three buildings worth located in the same industrial zone) at the entrance to the Valais is Meubles Pesse in Monthey. They have a good selection of furniture.

www.pesse.ch

There is also a Fly store in Monthey http://www.fly.ch

I don't know about this store but I have heard the name before.

My friend recently bought a holiday appt in Champery and raved about this furniture store that sold "traditional wooden" furniture that she found. She said it was quite reasonably priced - if you want me to find out where it was - let me know and I will ask her

I'm pretty sure that would Trisconi in Monthey which Verbier mentioned. It is huge - four or five floors of pine "chalet style" stuff.

Pesse is excellent but in a different price and quality league than IKEA. Again they have a huge store in Monthey to suit all tastes - traditional to modern - if not all wallets.
Pfister outside Lausanne (next to IKEA) is also an alternative:

I wouldn't worry that Monthey isn't near Sion. All these places will deliver.

Although this thread is being dragged up from the past, I still want to know why IKEA furniture shouldn't be used at altitude - where did you hear this?

Re: Buying Furniture - Valais/Vaud

We have an apartment at 1200m in France which has some IKEA furniture in it, bought 12 years ago. We were also warned by the local furniture store which did some made-to-measure stuff for us that the IKEA products would maybe warp at altitude. The dryness of the air would apparently have a bad effect on the thin, unseasoned wood.

I have to say that I regret the IKEA purchases and I never buy there now but it's not because they have in any way reacted badly to life at altitude. Poor quality that can't withstand a few week's annual use is another issue

Hello,

I am very interested in buying used furniture, 'cause I have a little budget and I will be moving in a new apartment in January. What kind of furniture do you have to sell ? Can you give more details (or photos ?) I am in Fribourg, too.

I strongly endorse this recommendation. We have furnished three apartments over the last 10 years and used a variety of places (all mentioned in this thread) but Pesse wins our 'gold medal'. Nothing is too much trouble, they deliver and erect the furniture as necessary and come back to rectify any faults or problems very promptly. They also keep to delivery dates and their service in store is VERY helpful.

Re: Buying Furniture - Valais/Vaud

There are some stores in Châteauneuf - Valais like Conforama,
www.conforama.ch

Just drive straight out of Sion along the route cantonal direction Martiny or on the motorway direction Martiny and get off at Châteauneuf/Monthey and head back to direction Sion.
