Moving to Switzerland

Hi,

I am moving to Zurich area very shortly (I am starting my job on 15 th of June).
I am not familiar with area at all, I will move first and look for apartment and then will bring my wife and son.
I was looking at apartments in Zurich / Horgen area and I have few questions:
1. Are there any areas I should avoid (non-safe)?
2. How hard is it to find apartment which is pretty much available straight away?
3. Where should I look for temporary accommodation for the time of looking for apartment (hostel? rent a room for a month in some apartment?)

ANY advice is very, very welcome.

Regards,
Jacek

Re: Moving to Switzerland

I'm also moving to Switzerland soon and was considering Zurich but I've decided to live nearer work in Schaffhausen, especially as it's such a lovely city.

Good luck with your search, I'm sure you'll get plenty of tips here.

Not really.
But there are areas (like the Langstrasse) where the night-life is very active.

Crime does exist in Switzerland, but there are no "no-go" areas (of which I know).

That is not the question - the question is really how much are you prepared to pay?
It's not impossible, though.
I would read as many threads in the "Housing" section of this board as you can take...

You can use
http://en.comparis.ch/immobilien/mar...ch&mode=expand
to look for apartments on various housing-sites.

Can't help with that.
A month is quite short actually (IMO) to find something decent for not too much money.
Affordable housing is a highly sought-after resource, especially in Zurich (and Geneva).

Re: Moving to Switzerland

So... what would you guys advice as a starting point / location?
Should I look for a hostel / cheap hotel and get a room for a month or something?

I can now see how hard is it to get room for short period of time and even harder to get apartment
