Leaving Switzerland and doing an appartment handover at the end of June. Once this is done, how long until we get our deposit back? Paper work involved?

It really depends on how cooperative your regie or landlord will be. If your landlord is very cooperative and the apartment is not in need of repairs, then you can get your deposit as fast as 2 weeks after handing over apartment. On the other hand I have heard of many landlords taking their sweet time to release security deposit funds. Paperwork is as follows:

Be sure to bring the original inspection report with you from when you moved in and bring an expert with you (in addition to the head of the cleaning company) if you are not one. This is the report that will be referred to during the inspection. Also, if there are damages, missing keys, the amount you will charged will be indicated here.

Obtain the release forms from the bank in advance and bring them with you to the inspection. However, please keep in mind that the person doing the inspection may not be authorized to sign the release. Still bring the papers with so you can fill in the amount to be returned to you, unless this is in dispute.

The bad news is that it can take up to a year to see the money. I have had clients that got their deposit back the next day so the system can and does work.
