Normal to pay for a quote?

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, I did do a search!!! We recently had someone to quote us to fit a new shower for us. My husband in the end decided to fit it himself but we did use the company to do a few other bits that needed doing. Getting the bill today I noticed we were charged for him to come and see if he could fit the shower. 45 mins when he was actually only here for 15! Is this usual to pay for someone to give you a quote for a job?

Re: Normal to pay for a quote?

we never have, had quite a few builders in to quote for various bits and pieces and never received a bill yet for just the quote.

Re: Normal to pay for a quote?

Some do, some don't.

Suggest you say "thank you very much, but if you don't want the business, we'll look elsewhere" and do so (i.e. for someone who'll not charge for the estimate).

Go over the Bauhaus 'cros the border from you. They'll be able to do it for a fraction of the cost.

EDIT: ooops. Just realised that it has already happened. You can challenge it, but he'll get the money, as you cannot withold payment for services rendered. You'll find he charged you 15 min time + 15 min travel x 2 = 45 min.

Re: Normal to pay for a quote?

I'm starting to see this more and more lately - from builders, electricians, repairmen, and all sorts of service providers. Sometimes it's a hundred CHF, sometimes very much more than that.

(One company told me that they started charging for quotes because they get so little business after putting together an offer. Ummm... erm... maybe they should be asking themselves 'why?'... )

To make sure you don't get caught unawares, be sure to ask if the Offerte is 'gratis und unverbindliche' - ask before scheduling a visit, and get that in writing.

Some do, some don't, some charge travelling time, some don't... always best to ask BEFORE you get someone out

Me neither.... Regional differences and all. I think we picked the better region.

Re: Normal to pay for a quote?

I don't know about CH but in the US it's normal to have to pay a fee to a plumber just for them to come and assess the work to be done, but they have to tell you in advance what that fee is. Further, the plumber you contract with applies that fee to the labor costs when they actually do the work.
