OK, coming from London with all it's entertaining options, Rapperswil is like Windsor or Bournemouth at very, very small level.

Go for Zurich

Re: Whats Rapperswil-Jona like?

Rapperswil is a beautiful city. It has a gorgeous view, great restaurants next to the lake that are usually very full during the evening.

You also have a waterpark just on the other side of the lake.

If you like castles, there is a really nice one in the city centre, which is perfect to make a two member party

The great thing is you have the S5 and the S7 that get you in Zürich HB or Stadelhoffen in about 40 minutes, having the possibility to enjoy night life there, and having the most gorgeous view when you wake up next morning with a throbbing headache

I highly advise it ^^

Lived there for 6 years. Agree with beautiful but it's not a city by any stretch of the imagination .

It can get very touristy - weekends in the summer draw the crowds.

Depends on where you come from. In the USA, a one-horse settlement that would be called a hamlet in Switzerland can be called a city. A general store, a gas station, four homes, a one-room school house plus a tiny church somewhere on a hill, and the whole thing is a city. There are quite a few examples in our area.

However, as a Swiss I agree with you, Rapperswil is a nice little town, but that's about it.

Re: Whats Rapperswil-Jona like?

A nice little place to pass a few enjoyable hours but not a city. Many small towns here call themselves cities, but do not have all the services or facilities that would be necessary to merit that category in the strict sense of the word!
Zurich city centre is small but it does have everything a city needs including a conglomeration of small villages that make up a large urban and industrial area.
Not talking London/Paris/etc. large though!
