Grad student & wife looking for [info about] apartments in Bern

Hi everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster. I'll be starting graduate studies (Masters in Experimental Physics) as the University of Bern in the fall of this year.

For now, my wife and I are getting everything together for the move, but we're also trying to find a decent place to live in or around Bern starting in August.

The various apartment searching websites (homegate, immoscout24, etc.) have been quite useful, but I figured I'd also ask for some more local information here in the forum.

[Deleted as this is Advertisement text]

We've visited the city twice so far and visited some apartments in Bümpliz which were nice, but we're not really sure what other neighborhoods are suitable.

We'll be moving in August, and will likely be staying in a furnished place for two weeks or so until we find an apartment of our own, so having some places to look drawn up ahead of time would be great.

Also, there's something we didn't really find out while we were in town: is it common for apartment complexes to show "for rent" signs outside if there's units available in that building? That seems to be really common in the US, but we didn't really notice any such signs in Bern. Other than the websites listed above, are there any good resources for searching for apartments? Newspaper ads? Other publications?

Any information or advice would certainly be welcome! When we finally do move to Bern, we'd love to meet up with some other English-speakers in the city and get a drink.

Thanks!

Look at www.immobern.ch and www.anzeiger.ch. You will generally not find "for rent" signs outside buildings as you would in America. Bümpliz, and Ausserholligen are good, cheap areas - Bümpliz is generally called the bad area of town but there are some lovely flats and it is really not as bad as people on EF like to make it out to be. Länggasse and Lorraine are also good areas to live in Bern.
