Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Hello Everyone,

We are planning to move from the UK to Zurich in July and would like to use movers. Has anyone used moving companies beofre and if so whom?

We would be moving from a 2 bed home.

Any advice would be great. Thanks

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Hi,

I recently moved from the UK with my husband and organised our move. Ours didn't go very well unfortunately, our removal company lost and broke some of our furniture, which was very disappointing. I won't post their name on here to save their blushes, but send me a PM if you'd like to know who not to use!

Other companies that we looked into included Britannia, who did an excellent move for my father when he moved from the UK to France, they were our second choice and I wish we'd used them instead. We also looked at Ryans, and the Removal Group, who were competitive on prices for our 2 bedroom move.

Also, you probably know this, but it's very important to get a removal co who are part of the British Association of Removals, this protects you and is a quality mark (although no good for our removal co), and make sure you take out insurance for shipping of your goods so that if they stuff it up (like ours did) then you can claim the costs back!

Best of luck with it! If you want to hear more of my grumbling then get in touch

HT

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

I moved over from the UK a month ago - I initially used a local Scottish company (Guardian removals), who then transferred my furniture to Luker Brothers, a company based in Oxford - who seem to have a lot of experience in Swiss moves.
http://www.lukerbros.co.uk/
I got the furniture in just over two weeks (from Edinburgh to Basel), which I thought was pretty quick as that time included the Easter holidays. They were well informed about what needed done for Swiss customs, and all in all seemed pretty efficient.

Second for Luker Bros. They had mixed press on here but I found them very efficient with good communication at a reasonable price.

We too had a horrendous experience with Pickfords. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Used France Removals (advertised on here) to bring a few boxes of personal stuff from Yorshire to Neuchatel last week and was very impressed with the service. They collected the stuff on Sunday in Yorkshire and delivered it to Neuchatel on Tuesday evening and nothing was broken even though my brother had done a pretty rubbish job of packing some of it.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

We used move corp. They are a middle man agent that groups together smaller deliveries for removal firms. I wouldn't use them again, they were rude and a tad dishonest, but, the company that actually did the move for us was called Clockwork. They were ok, a few scratches here and there but they were polite and efficient.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Hi All,

As a 10 year removals professional, though coming out to Geneva in 2 weeks and leaving my job to join my fiance so I am pretty unbiased, all of the companies mentioned above have fairly hit and miss reputations, Interdean are good, and Crown were organised by my fiances company packed really well and moved the goods very quickly to storage.
One thing to watch out for is getting prices for storage and also timelines, most removal companies will not want to give you a timeline as it keeps their options open but push them and you will get what you need.
Storage might be required so ask them for a rate and where the nearest warehouse to where you want to be near would be.
Swiss companies are always more expensive than using a UK firm.

feel free to pm me for more / any advice

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Thank you so far for the replies.

As it happens we had a quote this afternoon from Pickfords.

2.5K for a 2bed half house move. We already have a ben in Zurich and bedroom furniture so we are only looking for study, lounge and kitchen things to be moved.

They take 21 days too which seems a long time for us to wait for our things....hmmm going to check out Luke Bros.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

I used Anglo Pacific, primarily as they had a regional office 10 minutes from my front door in the UK

They were extremely helpful and we had our boxes in record time.

Although one of our boxes carrying a tv was a little bashed and as a result the tv was broken. When trying to get money back from all the insurance we paid, they asked us to get a quote from a repair shop in lugano where we had moved to. Not speaking an iota of italian this was rather difficult and in the end we gave up...

Despite this i would still recommend them as a moving company.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

That is exactly how I would describe Luker Bros. Move one was fantastic, no problems at all. Second move was a total disaster.

We also had a bad experiance with pickfords, they damaged some of our furniture and the folk from this side damaged our door frame and left a huge dent in it.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Does anyone have any advice or info on companies that do smaller moves? I'll be moving to Zurich to start a job in August and won't be moving much. Mainly books and CDs (a tea chest worth), a couple bicycles and a few miscellaneous items. The bikes can wait really, so maybe 1-2 tea chests. Anyone got some spare space?

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Hi,

We have just moved to Baden from the UK and used www.pearsonhomemoving.com , they were fantastic. They came to view the property, give us an amazing quote, arrived at 8am move day, supplied all packing stuff, packed the full 3 bed house up and were finished by 3pm! On arrival here they took 3 hours and had unpacked everything and taken all the packaging away for us! There were no problem with customs...they arranged it all. Would highly recommend them.

Good Luck.

Re: Advice on Moving Companies from UK

Comimg from East Anglia we tried various firms, big and small, Pickfords price was high and wanted to unload at their depot onto another lorry, double handling and more risk. We ended up with Hadley and Ottaway who cover East Anglia, competitive price, team arrived to do the packing, all done in a day, loaded the lorry, driver said see you at your new house in 2 days, duly arrived at said time, 2 local porters with him, unloaded everything in the correct rooms, assembled things without being asked to, job finished, everything 100%. Couldn't fault the firm.

For smaller moves try Anglo Pacific, Luker Bros are good and efficient but you will pay through the nose for it I reckon.

We used Crown. No complaints at all. Were a bit more expensive, but the company I worked for paid for the move.

Yep, Crown as I mentioned has looked after our move through my fiances company and have been very efficient so far, good office staff and very good packers in the UK, ask for Simon he was the foreman and very good - that said we still have to have delivery in Switzerland so we will se the whole deal then!
