Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

Hi all - we're looking at a move to this side of the lake, somewhere between Kusnacht & Mannedorf. What we're really looking for is advice / info / summaries / feedback from the locals who know these areas - the keys for us are Küsnacht, Erlenbach, Winkel, Herrliberg, Meilen, Uetikon & Männedorf

How would you describe these places, and were would you pick to live if rent (which it is of course!) was no object! So ignore rent / tax discussions for this one please. Suspend your dis-belief

Some info on us if that helps...
- I will be working near airport, but am happy to commute (total commute door to door) up to 40-45 mins, so needs to be on trainline
- we are a couple (30 somethings) with no kids / dogs etc
- Interested in outdoor life (hence the lake!), socialising (but no party animals!)
- Looking for a place that is big enough to get by (eg a local Migros walking distance etc), and also some bards / places to hang out. But we like quaint / nice looking places

Thanks
K

Re: Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

Meilen is the best option, I'd say. The S7 goes to Zurich Stadelhofen, then on to the Hauptbahnhof without stopping, and you can also catch the S6 to get to the smaller towns between. There is a decent sized Migros, a few (rather expensive) restaurants, and a ferry across the lake to Horgen. The centre of the town is quite pretty, too.

Closer to Zurich and you're stuck with the slow S6. Further away and you have to change trains to spend an evening by the lake in Kuesnacht. Meilen is the perfect balance between the two.

Good luck!

I live in Uetikon and would add one more to your list - Stäfa and choose it if I had my time again. Kusnaught to Meilen (Meilen less so) is too full of "Gold coast people" (wealthy, rude, push in front of you at every opportunity) to really enjoy it. Uetikon is the odd one out still a counrty town in too many ways, friendly people but not many reasturants and no bars, shopping is limited. Stäfa and Manedorf are quite similar but Stäfa has more reasturants, bars, shopping and a great waterfront. The Germainde in Stäfa is more generous with their social services (supporting language classes, cresch costs are lower ect) than most of the places you mention. Check to see the S7 train timetable it is only 1/2 minutes more, then express from Meilen to Zürich. Bar wise there is not really any in this whole region (bars in resturants excluded) but for 1 near Herrliburg, Ocean Drive it is called and it is a winner, great music, good wines by the glass, diverse croud but not crouded. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi all - thanks for the input! I'm not too worried about the trains / times to work. Add that to the tax /rent price ignore list so

Really looking for people's pick of areas where they would live if they were us. Which they think are the nicest and why really.

so far I seem to have 1 vote for Meilen and 1 for Stafa yeah?

Re: Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

I started this post thinking about voting for Meilen, but while writing it I figured Küsnacht might be good for you, too.

Although I myself live in Uetikon (have lived in Küsnacht and Männedorf, too), my vote goes against it. I would vote for Uetikon if you were a family with kids and willing to use your car a lot, but it's not your case. As RTN stated, Uetikon is country, there is a small Coop and another similar store (Volg), plus a few nice restaurants, but the choice is limited.

Meilen has all kinds of shop and restaurants and not too many of the Gold Coast people.

If trains are not completely out of the equation, Küsnacht and Erlenbach could be options too, the biggest advantage is a direct train to Zurich Airport if that's where you'll work. That train goes only down to Herrliberg-Feldmeilen, only late evening (10pm) to Meilen. Erlenbach also has a big Migros and other shops. Küsnacht has both a Coop and a Migros and all stores you'll need for daily/weekly shopping. No way to avoid gold coast people there, though.

In any case you'd probably go to Zurich for nightlife, none of the towns on the lake are really big on that.

Re: Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

The thing is that they are all pretty nice, and benefit from blazing hot sun most of the day. Apart from proximity to train stations/reliance on buses the only distinguishing factors people tend to use is proximity to shops/amenities, top of hill or lakeside, and I guess schools if you have kids. Based on your circumstances (which are pretty similar to mine) I'd suggest somewhere on the S16 line, such as Herrliberg-Feldmeilen, or Winkel, as both are near Coop etc and lakeside bars/restaurants. As for getting into the mountains for skiing etc, you will undoubtedly have to travel to Meilen first to get the train to Rapperswil to meet up with the IR trains, or go directly to HB and get on an IR train there.

Re: Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

Hi all - thanks for the input! Ok so, my head is clear on the "bigger" towns of Meilen, Mannedorf, Stafa and Kusnacht. What I'd like is your ideas on the smaller towns of Herrliberg, Winkel, Erlenbach & Uetikon.

What I know is - all are basically on the train line to airport / balsberg where I work.

What I'd like to know is:
- Rent - how would you order these in terms of most expensive to least expensive, say for the same sort of 3 room apartment. I know hard to say, but just your thoughts in terms of price & supply
- Bars / Restaraunts - which town has most / least. Not looking for nightclubs just somewhere to have a quiet bite to eat / drink in the evening as an options
- Shops - It looks like all of these either have a Migros or a Co-op nearby. The exception being Winkel, where the nearest seems to be Erlenbach. Does that sound right?
- Nicest - most importnat, how wuold you order these in terms of a top 4 of Winkel, Herrl, Erlenbach & Uetikon for a couple of 30 somethings who will spend alot of their time in the city, or at the lake, or in their nearby town.

Thanks
K

I've lived in Küsnacht for almost 2 years now and I've found the people here (from the shop owners, to teenagers and random people on the streets) are generally super polite and friendly.

Dude, just remember rule of thumb is: the bigger ones are Küsnacht, Meilen, Mannedorf and Stafa. Your needs for restaurants will be satisfied there, more so than the smaller ones. Stafa is further out than Mannedorf.

Cost wise, do a search on homegate and you will have an idea of their order in terms of affordability. Off the top of my head, Uetikon probably has the most affordable housing versus Erlenbach, Herrliberg, Kusnacht etc as its not ON the lake but behind one of the bigger towns, Mannedorf or Meilen - if my geography serves me correctly.

These 3 towns (Kusnacht, Meilen and Mannedorf) will have a bigger "centralised" shopping area where the supermarkets and other shops are. As for the smaller towns, they are all spread around. Winkel is in Erlenbach (though it does have a station of its own) but nothing there.

As for "nicest", each village has its own charm. I love where I am living although some people will think that its full of "gold coast people" who are apparently wealthy, rude and pushy.

Re: Towns between Kusnacht and Mannedorf - any tips / local advice?

Hi all - thanks so much for the replies and the PM's. What I think I'm saying is my target location is Kusnacht down to Stafa. I have my favourites within here (in terms of the feel, look, size, facilities, distance to HB, distance to work etc) listed out from 1-7. If I do a search on this entire area, within my budget on say homegate( know there are other sites, but just as an example) I find c. 130. Now I know 50% will be too far from the train etc for us, but still should give us a decent sized list to work from.

Thanks so much for the help!

Ahem...sorry about that. I just don't like mixing with you lot in supermakets, especially on Saturday mornings
