Advice for buying at Ikea Basel

Hi Everyone,

I just moved to Basel (alone) since last 2 months and this is my first time aboard. Now I need to hear some experiences out of you guys as I will have to move to the permanent flat end of this month without own furnitures.

I went to Ikea at Pratteln 3 times to short-list the furnitures I really need. Some of small stuffs I gradually carried them back every time (still many have to be done later). I am now worrying about the big ones.

My questions for your advice are;
I want to buy bed frame with slats, mattress, quilt, sofa and TV bench which most of them are really big and consisting of parts. How do I have to do at Ikea? Note down regal number on each lable and pull each part from there & put on a trolley then pay at the cashier, isn't it? That would really be my problem as I do not have enough energy for that. Is there any Ikea staff can help?

Some of items are available for ordering online, do you know is there any extra fee on that? I tried to google the website, didn't mention about this, unfortunately, I do not understand German yet to call their customer service. With online purchase, is it true that I cann't fix the delivery date? I will have 1 day off for moving house which I want to finish buying & delivery; otherwise I will have to sleep on the floor of an emply flat.

Total amounts of purchase will be around 1500 - 2000 CHF which would cost around 150 - 200 delivery by service @ Ikea. Could you guys advice how long does it take from Pratteln to Basel (inc. loading all stuffs into a flat) if I would buy "man with a van" service instead? As most of them charge between 60 -100 per hour.

Quite a long message. I am getting much worry everyday closer to the move. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Re: Advice for buying at Ikea Basel

Hi Ovaho,

I've just had to do eactly the same thing, both in the UK (for things that will be shipping out in a month or so) and the Ikea in Spreitenbach. I actually thought the cost for delivery was approx £35 or 45(ish) CHF.

I know it might seem expensive, but my opinion would to get Ikea to do the delivery. If you're already spending that much money, is another 150CHF that much more? The thing to remember, is that if anything gets damaged it'll up to the their drivers to sort out aswell.

I found that Ikea staff were available to get the stuff off the shelves for me and put it on the trolley. After paying, I wheeled the bed etc to the delivery office, (from memory it was over 100chf to central Basel) I was able to specify the day, but not the time. :-(
