Family friendly neighborhoods near ZIS?

First, apologies if this is a well worn subject. Please believe me, I have used the search bar but for some reason haven't found much information that is recent!

I'm looking for advice on neighborhoods that are good for a family of four, and within easy reach of ZIS and central Zurich where husband will be working.

Would love any and all advice on that topic (as well as using the search tool).

Thanks,
Ellen

I am assuming that your kids will be in the Aldiswil / Kilchberg campus of the ZIS. Do a search on homegate.ch and click on apartments available on the HORGEN side of the lake to get an idea of the prices realistic for your budget.

Prices will vary - the closer you are to the lake as well as the city, the more expensive the apartments will be (for example, Kilchberg and Rüshlikon are highly popular, whereas you can get more for your money space wise as you make your way down the lake to places like Horgen, Thalwil etc). Adliswil will be a good area to consider. It isnt on the lake but near the city and house prices there are very reasonable comapared to those towns on the lake.

You can then use the sbb.ch website to calculate your husband's commute time as well as check out the frequency of the trains in the area that you want to live in.

Without more information with regards to your specific requirements (for example: your husband's max commute time treshold etc) and budget, your question is very broad still. Have a look at this thread which will tell you how rooms are counted here in Switzerland for starters:

How are rooms/pieces counted in home adverts?

Welcome to the forum and Zurich in advance!

Re: Family friendly neighborhoods near ZIS?

Hi Ellen-

Having just gone through the housing process in the Zurich area, I can tell you it is at a premium & difficult. Have you ever visited before? Housing is very different than the U.S. The homes/flats are much smaller.

We have kids going to ZIS & the realtor suggested the same areas as mentioned....Kilchberg, Ruschlikon, Thalwil, Horgen, Oberriden. Really depends on what you are looking for. We were set on a house but ended up in a flat. There was nothing on the market & we needed a place to live asap.

The problems we ran into were: 1) There is limited housing 2) when it becomes available you need to move quickly 3) multiple applications per house etc...

When is your expected arrival date?

We used homegate.ch, immostreet.ch, a private realtor (non relocation person) & this forum.

Good luck!!

Re: Family friendly neighborhoods near ZIS?

Hi, we have just enrolled our daughter into ZIS and after spending a lot of time researching (and then visiting) a number of different locations we found Thalwil the most 'family friendly' It had the largest choice of family
accommodation, reasonable costs, good shops and excellent location to visit Zurich/coutryside. The fact that our relocation rep lived their sealed the deal!
In terms of selecting the property you have to move very quickly, but when you find the right place you know immediately so good luck!

Re: Family friendly neighborhoods near ZIS?

Don't forget to consider the tax implications vs rental cost. Some areas (Thalwil, Horgen) have lower taxes than others (Adliswil). We also factored that into our decision (and chose Thalwil).
