Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

I found now my own way how to apply without visiting. I ask when the viewing date is. Then I search on their website the application form. I print it out, wait till the day of the viewing date and send then the application form to them.

Good that you posted your solution - it may be of help to other people in same situation.

Watch out though, I remember selecting places based on the pictures which were matching all my requirements, and at the visit day, for one thing or another they were disappointing.

Good luck finding your new home!

It takes 2.5 hours one way to reach Zürich HB. Then you expect me to visit 3-4 flats while having my toddler with me? And in the evening again 2.5 hours? And what will be the benefit? Meeting 50 other applicants? No thanks. That's not worth the trip. It's enough for me to see the google-location-map plus some pictures of the flat. I'm not really picky...I just need a flat. URGENT.
I know all that and its why im offering help. If the apartments are in zurich downtown i can do it. I didnt offer just to look good, but because i want to help you. I go to walk with my babys almost everyday i just pick a tram get out somewhere (mainly Banhofstrasse) and walk a bit, then catch a tram back home. Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday I have german clases and my day gets complicated. So I could help thursday or friday. you give me the address and i catch a tram in that direction no biggy.

If you dont want to get a free favor then you can hire someone to do that. For example I have a friend that goes grocery shopping if you have long working hours, makes house visit if you travel (water plants, refill cat bowls etc) and I could ask her if she goes to visit the apartments for you. I mean you just need someone to go and say, Can I have the aplication paper please. go to the nearest post and send it to you. She has already the monthly pass for all zones and if you offer some francs per aplication sent, it could be a deal. Oh and add that she is swiss and speaks perfect swiss-german, german and english.
Think about it, my offer stands, but if you are shy to accept then i also gave you another option.

Hope you find a solution soon! Have a great weekend

That is a pity you have to be in dowtown as I have an apartment available in July for 2400 CHF a month with the options of buying the furniture

Well, you will probably not want to hear this, but anyway: The viewings are not only made for you to look at a flat. The landlord has a good look at the applicants there as well and picks his favourites. You can send the landlords many forms on whatever date you want, it's dead simple: If you don't view flats, you won't get one..

And I even less get why you cannot be bothered to look at the place you are planning to live - especially if you have a child. Get a baby-sitter or take the child with you. End of story.

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

As suggested, I would consider moving into a short-term serviced apartment, for instance http://www.cityappartements.ch/e/ (but there are others). I lived in one of these places for a while when I first arrived. Perfectly acceptable, if functional apartments that you can rent by the month. I wouldn't want to stay in one long term but OK for a month or two.

Why not move into one of these places and then start looking for a permanent place?

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

Just wanted to inform you that I found a lovely newly renovated (in Jan 2011) 2 bedroom flat in Oerlikon :-) Without viewing it. But I got all the pictures and it looks just as I wanted it to be.

As usual, I'm lucky

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

I'd love to meet at a playground, my daugther just turned 3 on 1 May. However, I'm a working mum ... 4 days at the office, 1 day from home. Maybe you are free on a weekend once? Let's catch up after I moved to Zürich.

Got to tell me how, I'm still in the UK with a nearly 3 year old, and so it's even harder for me to 'pop over' for viewings.

I just told them that I'm living 2 hours away from Zürich and that viewing the pictures is enough for me and that I know the area. And I told them that I got a child and that the nursery is just accross the house and for later the school too....

For which date you need a flat? You are more than welcome to stay with me a few weeks if you can't find a flat and then search from there. I know how stressful the situation can be.

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

I start work in September, but my daughter will start integration at nursery in mid August. I'm lucky that she will be at a work subsidised nursery rather than a city subsidised one so I can look outside of the city, but I have no idea what's good or bad.

You are very kind to offer to put me up, but I wouldn't be able to share a room with my little angel, and can't expect anyone else to put up with the darling. . If I still haven't anything sorted I will rent a short term apartment for August.

I just would rather not have to move my girl twice, especially as her father will move to be with his girlfriend a month before I move to Zurich, so she will be all over the place and will need stability.

Not totally true, I have been looking for apartment and looked over 100 apartments and only in 2 ocations I've got to see the person in charge, normally is people looking for nachmieter and they just let you see the apartment and give you the aplication form. She was looking for help, not to get lectured IMHO.

And I actually did help by speaking out the truth everyone is thinking who reads this: By not showing up, you make it nearly impossible yourself. That's it.

I am currently looking for a Nachmieter myself. I want to have the process under control, so I hand out the forms in person after people watched my place. Not because I don't like single mums or something, but because I want to be sure that the person will in the end in fact sign a contract. Because otherwise it is not the landlords but my problem. I once had to pay a month longer because somebody who REALLY REALLY DESPERATELY wanted the flat jumped out of the contract in the last second.

I am offering no comfort here, but honest advice. Take it or leave it.

P.S: I have moved three times within the Zurich region and only applied for three flats. Looks like I have a better hit rate than you. Who would you listen to, the one who gets his places or the one who had to apply for 100 flats?

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

I can only help with this link.

http://www.arrivare-zh.ch/

The flats are still being built and only some of the houses are already finished (June 1).

It's worth checking it out.

They are in 8046 Zürich Affoltern.

The location is ok, near the station, Migros etc. Affoltern is not really "posh", but there are many families living there.

There is also a English/German Kinderkrippe or playgroup near by.

Re: Nearly impossible to find a flat in Zürich city??

The market in Zurich is quite tight and tough, but not impossible, as you just proofed.

On the other side I don't really understand why people refuse living just train minutes away from the city.

If you take the tram from Zurich station to Wollishofen or Höngg it will also take you at least 30 minutes.

Same time invested in a train ride provides you with tons of cheap housing options.

Don't ask me, I moved to Schwyz... but my flat is just 18 minutes by car from Sihlcity. And has a bi-lingual English/German Kindergarden next to it. Did I mention that I am looking for a Nachmieter

For a family that looks for a peaceful and nice appartment I do agree, many beautiful places to be found on a 30 minutes commute radius.

Bu some of us want to have a social or nightlife and everything happens in Züri City.

probably you dont have a decease that have you at home living only by an IV rente, your wife doesnt need to stay at home to take care of you and 2 babys instead of going to work and provide an extra incoming for the family. Probably in your apartment search is not so important that is habilitated for wheelchair and other specifications that only makes the apartment expensiver to rent when you can actually afford only half of it. So Im sorry if I dont congratulate you in your better hit rate. And thank you for the feeling you just gave me.
