Sign 1st lease - what happens next?

Hi all - we're about to sign our first lease, and are wondering once we do, what are the next things to think about. Questions are...

1) Local community - when do we register there? We have no working visa's (from EU so should be ok), but just wondering when does this happen
2) Insurance - once we do this we haev to sort insurance. Which is mandatory, health I know but what about public etc?
3) TV / Internet - how long does this normally tke to get connected, and also do most apartments offer choice. We think we'd like Cablecom for the extra English TV
4) anything else - is there anything else we're missing that we have to do?

Sorry if these sound dumb, just trying to see what we have to do next. Were so focused on finding somewhere to live, we stopped thinking

Thanks!

Re: Sign 1st lease - what happens next?

1) Register as soon as possible. You have 8 days.

2) Look at Comparis to find what insurance works best for you. All basic insurance covers the same stuff. Supplementary insurance varies a lot.

3) If you're building allows Cablecom hook-ups, it should be relatively fast. Not all buildings are supported so you might have to have Swisscom or satellite.

4) Get a bus pass? I'd recommend a halbtax at the very least. Don't forget to sign up for the electricity and Billag (loads of threads). Consider personal liability insurance (also look at Comparis). And don't forget to actually have some fun.

Register as soon as possible at the Germiende indeed! It will get the paperwork you need for pretty much all else underway ASAP.

Your source for this?

I just registered a client today (in Würenlingen) and on the gemeinde website it was very clear, one must register within 14 days.

Re: Sign 1st lease - what happens next?

Hi kev132. Where are you living? (sorry if I missed this.) Will help with advice about transport passes, etc.

Regarding phone/internet, I was unpleasantly surprised to discover that although Swisscom at first claimed they could hook up my phone and internet without a problem by switching over the previous tenants line, they later told me I needed to hire an electrician (when it turned out the previous tenants hadn't had internet/phone).

One thing you may want to be aware of, just so it's not a surprise:
Billag (TV / radio tax): Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?
