Any info on Blonay?

Hi there!
I'm moving to Switzerland in August to start a teaching job in St. Legier, near Vevey. Can't wait to start!
Blonay has been recommended as a place to rent - does anyone know what it is like to live there? Is it big? Much to do? Nice place? Any info will be gratefully received - thanks!

Re: Any info on Blonay?

I would describe it as a quiet village part way up the hill. It has the basic amenities but not much more. Generally you have nice views of the lake, but dependent on exactly where you are in Blonay.

Re: Any info on Blonay?

I lived very close to Blonay for many years.
It's rural and very pretty, but is changing drastically.
Almost every available piece of land is being built on, with new apartment blocks and houses springing up everywhere.
When I was there a couple of weeks ago I had difficulty finding my way through the main street because new roundabouts and a supermarket complex have been built where there used to be a simple country road.
You'll find very many English speakers and it's easy to get to St.Legier and Vevey from there.
It's still not the most lively of places though.

But is just on the outskirts of Monteux and Vevey (10 mins drive) and within easy drive (20 mins) of Lausanne along the autoroute. It also has good bus links to Montreux and Vevey plus a train link to Montreux which connects you to all the main line trains. You're definitely not cut off there.

It's got some decent restaurants a good Migros supermarket, post office, bakery, pharmacy, doctors, dentists etc in fact all the shops you'd want for daily needs. There has been a lot of construction but for all of that it's still one of the nicest villages in the area. I'd live there and I'm pretty fussy.

BTW no villages around Montreux Vevey or Lausanne have nightlife and all are quiet.

Nev sums it up very well. I've been here nearly 22 years and there's no where else I'd rather be.

Many thanks for the replies.
I am still looking at Blonay or Vevey to live. I fancied Lausenne as I have heard there is more going on there but it would be too far to travel to work in St. Legier.
Any other suggestions that are not more than half an hour away from St.Legier as a good place to live?

Re: Any info on Blonay?

blonay is cute. we have a friend with a boulangerie there and it is quite nice. but if you want someplace that has something going on, go to vevey, at least. blonay is great with kids or couples, but i would imagine it isn't the easiest place on your own, especially if you like to go out.

Re: Any info on Blonay?

Blonay is more like the family friendly quiet place.
If you have a car you can try the eastern suburbs of Lausanne (Pully, Lutry, Paudex, Belmont) and get to St-Legier in 30 minutes. If you don't then I would advise you Vevey which is well connected to everywhere (you can reach Lausanne or Montreux in 15 minutes by train and Blonay 15 minutes by bus).

There's certainly more going on in Vevey than in Blonay but then what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another.
I thought Blonay was like a one-horse-town where someone had shot the horse.

Yet you still had difficulty finding your way through the centre of town!

Re: Any info on Blonay?

Hi,
been here 4 years and love it altho I think I actually prefer St Légier now. 10 mins to lake and skiing. Great school and teachers at the school in St Légier, I know it well.I work in Lausanne but much prefer living out here, but I guess it really depends on your lifestyle, I know quite a few of the teachers live locally village. What are you teaching? You might get my daughter next year!

Re: Any info on Blonay?

Think I will end up at St.Legier. I'll be teaching at Haut-Lac and can't wait!! I will hopefully get an Apartment sorted very soon but it would be nice to be near the School. You have put my mind at rest knowing its a nice place with other teachers living locally. I will be teaching Music and am so excited!!

Similar, it has a railway that runs to Vevey, the village is quite spread out by now, plenty of local commerces, quite expensive to rent, even worse to buy.

Full of Nescafs driving Volvos

Re: Any info on Blonay?

Thanks. I suspect I might be a Nescaf (minus the Volvo)...

For some reason I am drawn to living to the west of Vevey (between there and Lausanne) rather than the east, but can't really put my finger on why.

West is probably nicewr if you're without kids as Lausanne is closer, the East of Vevey is more family orientated with exception of Montreux which is a bit blingy.

Up in Chexbres/Chardonne and all the way along the cantonal road to Chatel is nice, good views, higher you go, (about 700m) more sun you'll have in the winter as the fog/low clouds stay below this level.

(Chatel is just inside Fribourg, maybe interesting for taxes etc, also the state school system is considered better in FR than VD)
