| | Geneva or Lausanne?
Hello all,
I am 31 years old and I am planning to move to Switzerland soon for work.
I am thinking about renting a small apartment either in Geneva or Lausanne.
I have heard that Geneva is a little bit boring compared to Lausanne, is it true?
What do you suggest?

Nice view on the lake, charming city-center, very multinational without being a big city, slightly easier to get accomodation... I don't know Geneva enough for comparing very precisely, and anyway, my preferences could differ of yours... | Quote: | | | | | What do you suggest? | | | | | Define a bit more what matters for you (where would you work ? Do you speak French ?), but choose Lausanne anyway ;-)

Geneva - more financial and international organisations. More international in general. Closer to the French Alps.
Lausanne - a bit smaller. More hilly. More students. Closer to the rest of Switzerland.
If you can give us an idea of your interests and pastimes we can probably help better...
Cheers!

Thanks for your responses.
What I'm looking for in my future city?
I love hanging around with friends for a beer after work or a place where I can meet easily international people. Is never easy when you land in a completely new city...
I love sports, mainly Tennis, going to the gym also...
I will work as consultant engeneer so I will work in different projects and therefore locations within the Suisse Romande area.

since your location is France, you could also stay over the boarder if you want to be near Geneva.
(actually Geneva is a great place if you want to meet international people)

well, I prefer to live in Switzerland for several reasons.
That's why I am wondering where is the best place to live between Geneva and Lausanne.
What are the strong and weak points of both?

I think Lausanne is much better than Geneva, it is crazy expensive here and not much nightlife apart from hanging out at the lake in good weather

What you heard is true. You will struggle to find a place in both cities but as a 31 yo I would definitely go to Lausanne.
Geneva has its organisations but is otherwise quite dull. Lausanne has a bit less to offer in that regard but the nightlife and cultural offer in general is amazing. It seems that in summer there is a festival taking place almost every week in the city with now the Festival de la Cité! |

Lausanne on all counts, IMHO. Some tennis clubs to chose from. Cultural events galore, southern facing slope for the town, esp good in winter when Geneva is all under a gray cloud.

I worked at Geneva Airport, but lived in Lausanne.
Reason for that commute were simple:
- Flats are a tad cheaper in Lausanne. And the waiting list is shorter.
- lovely airy city built on a hill, compared to the soupe-plate of Geneva.
And when I came accross a nice 1905 Belle Epoque flat for a very little rent, I was settled in :-)

It's not even a contest, IMHO...Lausanne, by a landslide...Everyone knows the arguments that Geneva is the least Suisse city en Suisse but it entirely lacks the charm or atmosphere of Lausanne
