Moving from UK to Zurich

Hi all

I am moving to Zurich on the 16th of July to start an IT job so I am really excited. However I need to decide whether to transport my furniture over or if I should just buy everything when I get to Zurich.

Does anyone have any information on the cost of moving furniture from Manchester to Zurich?

Thank you

Thank you.

Having looked through some of the prices in Zurich I think I shall be trying to bring as much over with me as I can.

Just trying to get quotes so I know what kind of money I should be paying to transport things over.

A friend of mine used a company called Global Relocations and he was quite satisfied with their services. You can get a price quote on their website, depending on how much stuff you want to bring over and how fast, etc. Getting quotes online is pretty much valid for most relocation companies because they usually give you a personalized estimate.

Re: Moving from UK to Zurich

Not quite the same as moving to CH I know, but I just had Simpson Removals (based in Kent) shift 3 tea chests for me from Scotland back to Australia. Good service and very reasonable cost compared to other quotes I had (Pickfords and the like). The move anywhere so give them a try.

So as long as Customs and Quarantine don't get stuck into me at the other end I will be happy......

Good luck!

I moved from Manchester to Zurich with all my furniture from a medium sized two bedroom flat this time last year-ish. I was quoted various figures, ended up going with the cheapest and got stung with loads of additional charges. I'd not like to think how much it cost me in the end (>£2000).

If you have no idea how much stuff you have, it might be worth getting one of the more expensive (and reputable) firms like Pickfords to come out and give you a quote (including volume). That way you can just re-use that volume estimate on the numerous websites out there and get some ball park figures.

I would only bring your furniture if it's nice stuff that you would want to keep. If it's mainly Ikea type, then you can buy that here at only a small mark-up or pick up good condition furniture second hand from many of the ex pats that are frequently moving (EF is a gold mine for that!). The cost of having very large, bulky things shipped is, in my humble opinion, simply not worth it unless it's good quality stuff.

Alternatively, you can do we did and hire a big van and drive it over yourself. Long drive and lots of lifting but no waiting around and you save a lot of cash.

Re: Moving from UK to Zurich

Hi - welcome. I moved from Edinburgh at the end of November and loads of stuff. We did it in two batchs - long story - using a company called Luker Brothers (based in Oxford) and a company called Clockwork (who happen to have a base in Edinburgh but do operate out of the Newcastle area too). It cost us about £6,500 in total but we had loads - a 3 bedroom house of stuff and all our wordly posessions - cds, books, crockery, stuff from a double garage etc etc.

Of the two Clockwork was slightly cheaper and were more efficient, packed better, got the stuff to us faster and didn't lose any boxes - we lost a box with Luker Bros. They also provided a full packing service for that price - so came into the house and did everything, even taking plates out of cupboards and dismantling furniture. At this end both took the furniture and boxes up 4 flights of stairs to a top floor flat too. Ouch.

For us it has worked out cheaper in the long run but we were leaving our property to rent in the UK and tenant want in mostly unfurnished so we were in a different situation.

Hope that helps. How exciting - good luck with your move.

Re: Moving from UK to Zurich

I have used Crown Relocations from London to Zurich, No issues good service. A piece of advice, get the furniture flat packed and get it shipped with the rest of the relocation stuff. GO mad in IKEA!!!! Sometimes you get really good deals in Sales, just have to keep your eyes open!
