| | Please help me pick the place to live (Zug area)
Given:
- 4 people (me, nanny, 2 young kids) in CH
- I work in Zug
- Husband works in ... London and comes over on weekends (needs to take first flight on Monday morning back to London - 7 am flight, that is)
- have tops CHF 3100 for flat/house (incl. NK)
Looking for:
a 4 bedroom place in commutable distance both to Zug and Zurich airport with local taxes not higher then in Zug... Commute to Zug can be by bus or S-Bahn (not necessarily the same S-Bahn that would also go to Zurich)
I was considering Baar and Walchwil (the latter one for the views)
Ideally: I hope to find a flat/house with VIEWS or something else out of the ordinary ...so that I know every morning I wake up - "why am I hear?" (if that makes sense?
Given the tight budget for the accommodation I think I would need more insider knowledge about local towns/villages than I can get form UK or when on one week introductory visit...
Please, help by sharing your ideas or experiences!
Thank you:-)

I have many friends and aquaintences who've done it. I am told that they get used to one another and don't wake up at every sound from the other. As a child, I shared a room with my TWO younger brothers until I was 14!
Anyhow, just some encouragement that it CAN be done. And with the money saved from a smaller place, you can visit the UK more often | This user would like to thank jetset for this useful post: | |

I am more than a little biased because I used to live there, but I would recommend Walchwil, especially higher up, where the views of the lake and Mt Rigi are even more spectacular. We found it to be a very friendly little village and used to hang out with the locals at the pub (I think it may have moved ...)
There is also a good sized Spar, doctor, dentist, good restaurants, good train and bus connections, and we frequently saw young children walking to school unescorted, which was a lovely sight!

Your other options are Thalwil (direct Inter-Regio trains to Zug and Zurich airport in opposite directions) and Cham (only the 5.18am IR train goes directly to the Zurich airport; S1 train goes to Zug every 15 mins or so).
However, sorry to let you know that your budget for a 4-bedroom flat (known as 5.5-Zimmer in local real estate lingo) leaves you with very little choice, let alone one with a view.
Have a look on homegate.ch - good luck!

What do you think about Rotkreuz?

Steinhausen has quite a few places these size, with proximity for Zug, but the view probably is lacking

Definitely lots of Sun in Rotkreuz... Too much as I can't keep up with watering my Tomatoes, Corn & Grapes. Rotkreuz is also on the Direct line to Zurich.
I hope you can prove me wrong, but to find a 4 bedroom apartment , with a nice view for that price, is going to be tough. You will find them, but they will be in less accessible areas. If your husband needs to commute, then that's going to be brutal. You may have to up your price or compromise on what you want.
Good luck

You can't beat Oberaegeri for great views!!
Also nice views can be had in Unteraegeri depending on the location of your house/flat.
cheers

| | Re: Please help me pick the place to live (Zug area) You're not gonna find a 5.5 with good views for CHF3100.- so you either need to increase your budget or lower your expectations (i.e. no views). For good connectivity to the airport, I would recommend villages/towns not too far from train stations, There are two main lines: · Fast line from Zug to Zuerich you can either change at Thalwil, or in Zuerich to get to the airport which should take around 60 - 90 minutes. If you opt for this option, any part of zug should be good as there are good connections (Baar 5 mins by train, Cham 10 mins, Rotkreuz 15 mins, Walchwil 15-20mins). · Slow Train S9: To catch the morning flight you have to take the first train and change in Alstetten if I remember correctly. The train stops at Steinhausen so this is another option for you, then you're in the gemindes of Zuerich which have a slightly higher tax but I don't think you should worry too much about the tax as the difference is negligible considering all the other factors. So any other stop on that line could potentially work but there is no international community so you're kind on your own. · As others suggested Thalwil is also a middle option with potentially lower prices than zug for bigger appartments. I would recommend Baar, Cham, Steinhausen (in no particular order) for something that meets your budget (no views). Walchwil for views but probably out of your budget. Thalwil for the inbetweener. and for wildcards I would say Knonau or Afflotern am Albis. I'm not too keen on Rotkreuz but that's just me as I believe it's suited for people working in Luzern rather than people wanting to have a good connection to Zuerich. But it could work in principle. I would also avoid the Aegerie's, it's a bit of a treck to get to zug and even more of a hassle to get to zuerich, and your social life will be restricted to the last bus/train back. | The following 2 users would like to thank The_Love_Doctor for this useful post: | |

Have you actually compared rental prices and taxes outside Zug? The homegate website, has a nice calculator which would give you an idea of the real cost (rent + tax) of living the various areas: http://www.homegate.ch/rent/real-estate-search
So don't fixate on the taxes of Zug OP, as you'll find that the rents are generally higher so any tax savings are cancelled out. Something nice, that size and with a view in Zug is going to be a huge ask at 3.1k, and forget a house, but go a little further afield and you can find some real gems

See here for train connections: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en?OK#focus
Thalwil and Baar will be nearest to the airport and also convenient for you to go to Zug for work. Cham has a lovely lake park and a river, but also quite expensive - unless you're willing to stay in an older building.

You might find something in Arth-Goldau or Brunnen, but in Canton Schwyz. Arth-Goldau offers views of the Rigi and possibly Zugersee. Brunnen has the gorgeous views of the Vierwaldstättersee and the mountains that surround it as well as the Stoos, Mythen and parts of the Rigi.

No way to catch the first plane from Zurich though (what a shame, really!)

Kussnacht am Rigi (Kanton Schwyz) has lovely views of Mount Rigi & Lake Luzern. It is not a direct train to Zug but regular buses go from Zug to Rotkreuz and then onto both Zurich and Zug. |
