Student in horgen?

Hello everybody,
I am a futur Zürich student and I have a touch on a very nice colocation/student room at horgen. It is 2 minutes from the lake and the rent is cheap.
However, it is a little bit far from Zürich center even with the train who seems efficient (23 minutes of transport from Horgen train's station to Zürich HB).

My problems are :
1- The last train is at 00:17. I think it is a little bit early, what if I want to stay until 2 or 3 am in Zürich center? I will be forced to stay until 5 am to have the first train returning Horgen
2- What kind of activities are there in Horgen? I like playing football and I saw they were lots of football fields, are there people to play with? Are there lots of students in Horgen?
3- I saw I would need a 1-4 zone train card to go to Zürich by train. I saw also that they were a boat which cross the lake from west (Horgen) to East (Hofstessen). Can we use the 1-4 card to take the boat? Or do we have to pay and how much it costs?

Okay and if there is anything else I should know about Horgen, feel free to informe me!

Thank you

Re: Student in horgen?

Hi there, I've been living in Horgen for just 2 weeks so am no expert but so far I am pretty happy living here. I live 10 minutes bike ride from the train station and I take the train every day to work in Zurich. The trains go pretty regularly and like you say its a pretty quick journey.

I don't think the ferry is included in the train ticket as you go to the other side of the lake which is a different zone, but I am not 100% sure.

It is nice to live here as Zurich itself is very busy and it always seems pretty peaceful when you get here. Also, I think at the weekend the trains go much later than midnight although probably just once an hour.

Re: Student in horgen?

There are lots of night trains and buses in Zurich. The SN8 goes to Horgen from HB and there are trains in the other direction too. The map of the whole night network is here and this is the timetable. To use these you need a night ticket as well as your normal ticket, it costs 5CHF.

And you can use the boats as long as your ticket covers the fare zones you're travelling in.

Re: Student in horgen?

There is a night network but only on Friday and Saturday nights. Those'll probably be your main going-out nights anyway though.

For me, the deciding factor wouldn't be the length of your train ride (5 minutes a day more or less never killed anyone) but the frequency of available trains. i.e. if you miss one, how long do you have to wait for the next one? In your case there are four trains an hour with a worst-case wait of 24 minutes. (For comparison, if you live anywhere in Zurich city, the trams there run every 7-10 minutes.)

I'd say take the flat in Horgen for the first few months, then look around when you get here. It could be you'll find something in town for about the same money... chances are it won't be advertised on the internet though, if you do get something it'll be through a friend of a friend.

Re: Student in horgen?

Hi Yamo! I hope you have settled in well in Horgen. I am organizing an event for people around here this Sunday to watch the Rugby final at 10am on big screen. The place is called Sale Bar and is located at Stockerstrasse 4 in Horgen. Doors are open from 9am and there will be English Breakfast served!
