Storage costs

Hi all.

Anyone have any information on the cost of storing a 20-foot container of furniture for two or three months? I imagine it would be cheaper across the border in France.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Re: Storage costs

The first issue to address is what is called "demurage". It is the cost of keeping the 20' container that belongs to the shipper. You normally have a few days once the container arrives in CH to unload it. If you want to keep the container you will have to pay a significant "rent" on it in addition to the cost of storing the container at someone's place in CH or France (you did not say where you are moving to). Ask the shipper, they should be able to give you the rates. From memory it can add up in a hurry.

It is normally best not to off load the container and put it into another container at the shipper's in CH as each time you move something, the risk of damage is real. It will also cost something.

You should negotiate this with the shipping company before you leave Chile to keep the container for up to 3 months. Or you could see how much it would be to buy a used container (it might be cheaper than renting). You would then sell the container once you are finished with it.

Re: Storage costs

How did this work out for you?
Im moving within Switzerland, and need to store all my furniture for 2 months.
Can you recommend a shipping container rental (like a truck-box)?
