Geneva : about its expansion

An interesting article in the newspaper today. It gives you an idea about what more and more
Genevans think about the expansion of the town, welcoming foreign buisenesses and expatriate workers.

We intended it to rise in cafés for some time already.
A very Genevan rumbling discontent, which has for target of names as "hedge fund",
"traders" or "multinationals".
Today, this dissatisfaction takes a more explicit shape.
The revision of the cantonal Main plan 2030 is the object of a strong contesting. Because
the vision which it gives of Geneva in the future dedicates the incredible economic
development of the canton.
Numerous are the ones who denounce then a " fuite en avant ( Full-speed ahead ?)".
" Our authorities do not lead the growth, they undergo it … This plan, which leads to a
massive concreting, is based on the exclusion.
We make people come from the outside to the
detriment of the inhabitants by whom do not any more find to find accommodation.
The Council of State shows fatalism with regard to the population growth.
To where we do want to go with this model? "

The person who so wonders is not a leftist. Christian Gottschall is a president of Peak-green,
the powerful association of the owners of villas, people who vote rather to the right.
One month ago, it gathered about twenty local groupings for a press conference the tone
of which was virulent. These owners, who took advantage of the growth to build their villa,
refuse today " to sacrifice the quality of life to an inevitable unbridled and
so-called economic development " They are not alone.
The agricultural circles, Greens, associations of environmental protection are on the same line.
The front is heterogeneous, but rather vast and transcends the ideological cleavages.
In other words that the future of Geneva, and the way of drawing it, do not make the unanimity.

The commitments of Geneva

The future cantonal Main plan traces on the charter of the aglomeration - valdo-Genevan.
Elaborated four years ago, this document aims at organizing a territory very dynamic but
crossed by profound cleavages. Geneva concentrates 70 % of the jobs of the region, but accommodates
only half of the inhabitants. The Genevans made a commitment to build more housing and
to favor the job creation outside their borders.
Plainly the Canton has to welcome half 200'000 additional inhabitants whom the region will count in twenty years.
He has to build 50'000 housing.
Four years ago, this commitment was hardly disputed.
But we pass henceforth in the concrete phase. Now, we do not build 2500 housing
a year without breaking eggs. It is planned to densify the urban crown, to build in
zone villas and to take about 4 % of farmlands.

For these protesters, the invoice is too much salted. And the game is not worth the candle.
These organizations demand henceforth a severe brake in the development.
Because Geneva expects to create another 60'000 jobs by 2030. Greens find that the projections of jobs
are " disproportionate with regard to the new housing " and are going to contribute "
to stress social inequalities ".
Labor unions and environmental associations gathered in the cross-border economic and social Coordination
fustigate the constitution of a "two-tier society". Sandrine Salerno, the socialist administrative councillor in town of Geneva,
denounces " the ultraattractiveness " of Geneva. " The machine was carried away and
the pressure on our territory is objective. "

François Erard, director of AgriGenève, the chamber of the farmers, says himself
surprised " that our authorities persist in this way which makes the bed of the populist movements ".
As Peak-green or Greens, AgriGenève demands " a thorough reflection on the type of
growth whom wishes our canton ". A wish which the socialists have already emitted this spring.

For the moment, the serious propositions for " another growth, more endogenous ",
are almost non-existent. And we do not see very well how, in Geneva, the debate could
begin on the basis of interests so contradictory and sometimes very sector-based.

Re: Geneva : about its expansion

I think what Geneva really needs is a scrub down. The city stinks, is grubby and generally unappealing IMO. In addition, they need to focus on the steady rise of criminal elements before focusing on expansion.
