How to find accomodation in Basel real quick for reasonable amounts?

Hi all,
Well after having been in Switzerland on and off since August last year, loosing my flatmate and great friend to a skiing tradgedy, having to move back to the UK for three months, running around the world doing bits of work and panicing my ass of generally, I have finally been offered a job in Basel that I have accepted. It is very short notice though and I am going to be starting on the 2nd of August so it will be very tight. I have fired off a number of requests to try and find a place to stay but am not having a whole load of success.
Money is a little tight at the moment due to the globe trotting to keep my business in the UK afloat so I can't just throw money at the problem and move into any old hotel. I need to find something reasonably priced (hopefully no more than about CHF 65 a night that will do for my first month till my first paycheck which will sort out most of the significant problems.
Does anybody have any good advice or pointers. I don't really know Basel that well and don't know anybody there, else that would be my first port of call. :-)
Thanks in advance all.

why not try couchsurfing- that is probably the cheapest option, and then maybe try hostels or local uni's.

good luck!

hostels or local uni's.
I will be sending off some requests to couchsurfing as I am practially a veteran member so thanks, excellent suggestion on that side.

The Unis and stuff is interesting. How would one approach them?

i really don't know, either contact someone you may know that goes to a local uni or just go there and speak to someone who works there and is nice. i have always found that just talking to people as much as you can and keep telling people you are looking for a short term place to stay, people will try to think of things you can do.

as for hostels, just google hostels in basel.

Hehe, well not having ever been to Basel except for my interview and one little fact finding mission, I really don't know anybody in the city and that is why I was asking here.

I have loads of Couchsurfing requests out now so am just hoping that one of them will come through. I eventually found a B&B about 20 minutes out of the city that can put me up from the 9th onwards.

Other than that, I am looking forward to meeting some of the Basel EFers in real life.

Re: How to find accomodation in Basel real quick for reasonable amounts?

Glad to hear you've got a job, I can't help very much with accommodation, but someone mentioned youth hostels and I remember this one is in a very nice part of town :-) http://www.youthhostel.ch/de/hostels...t-alban/preise

Does the company you're going to have an internal noticeboard on their intranet or something? Can HR help you out? (Assuming it's a corporate)

Thanks, I can't tell you how buzzed I am about it. It has taken a long time but I could not really have hoped for a better result!

Thank you so much, I will hold onto that in case the worst comes to the worst.

They are more small consultancy than corporate, so I think finding my own way around is pretty much expected.
If I could not, I would imagine that they would wonder what sort of person they were hiring, although saying that I am sure they will be more than happy to heap on the advice as soon as I arrive!!!

I have stayed here when I needed a few months in Basel

http://www.apaliving.ch/index.php?op...tpage&Itemid=1

Clean furnished rooms with a tv and friendly staff ... not a bad price either (well a lot less than a hotel) , just don't try to book it when the watch show is on

Try the basel university website:

https://markt.unibas.ch/

go to wohnen angebot

And then ubersetz the summaries of the places. As it's geared towards students, short stays are often possible.

Also, craigslist has a Basel site.
Good luck!

Re: How to find accomodation in Basel real quick for reasonable amounts?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. It has ended quite well for me.

I am Couchsurfing until the 9th and then moving into a B&B about 18 minutes on the train out of Basel for a massively expensive 450 CHF for 21 days. Bargain!!! Who said Swissyland was expensive?

After you're done there, please post a review. I, for one, am interested in knowing the quality so I can entertain the idea of putting my parents up in it when they come to visit.
