When to return an apartment?

Hello,

I'm returning my apartment at the end of September and I need to set the date and hour. Is there a reason not to do it on the very last day of September?

Thanks.

Re: When to return an apartment?

I am also going to be returning an apartment shortly and would be grateful for any tips about timing, protocols and things to be careful of. When the lease is in French (and you're not that good at French), this is a bit tricky.

Re: When to return an apartment?

NEVER EVER SIGN A CONTRACT OR LEASE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IT.

Please, do yourself a favour. Get a colleague, or pay a translator- and make sure you understand what you sign. The rental system in CH is very complicated, and changes from K/Canton to k/Canton. Sorry if this sounds mean, but if you sign contracts without understanding them, you can't complain that you are getting screwed. Bonne chance, Viel Glueck dabei.

Re: When to return an apartment?

So to be bloody minded, you wait until the very last minute to give the apartment back, and there is a disagreement! You forgot to clean one side of the oven! The Landlord gets somebody in to do the cleaning, and you are left with a CHF 150 bill.

If you hand over a few weeks ahead you have time to do the work yourself, or go to the Mieterverband for advice. So my advice is to hand over as soon as it is convenient to you.

But then you have to pay a few hundred of not between a thousand or two thousand franks in temporary accommodation.

Re: When to return an apartment?

I only been in two rented apartments, and my experience, going with my shrewd swiss daughter-in-law .... is to be out of the apartment the day before the last day, or else very early the last morning ... with hand-over around mid-day, leaving the rest of the day for any last minute glitches like cleaning something you over-looked or having to paint an odd wall or ceiling or two or three ....... You DO get the option of doing-it-yourself if you are armed and ready with a couple cans of cleaners and rags and bucket.... or your trusty Putz-Frau standing by.

Re: When to return an apartment?

I totally Agree with Ittigen...

Please follow the below process.
1. Try to hand over the apartment at least a week before the end of the month
2. Make sure you have cleaned every corner of the flat, else this may cost you a lot on the Day of handover.
3. Have your rental contract and the defects list handy with the photographs of the damages you took ( if any) when you initially rented the flat. this can save your back. else you will have to claim those damages by your self
4. have all your latest rental paid receipts with you handy. most of the time they say that "Still your last months rent is pending..."

Last but not the least, do not forget to remove your name plate from the door and post box after you handover the keys..

Cheers
Swath
