Living in Como Città or in Lugano??

Dear all,

Mi name is Miquel and I will be moving to Ticino at the end of September!

I come from Barcelona, 32 years old and I work as a Legal Counsel. I love to travel, sports in general (football, ski, trekings, running, bicycle,…), and enjoying good company while tasting a glass of good wine or a couple of beers.

I am going to start working in a Company based in Lugano and am trying to find where is better to rent an apartment: ¿Lugano, Como Cittá, or another city?

I am interested in living where there are more day to day "Chances" such as Gyms, Supermarkets, stores, nightlife, pubs, chances to make friends, restaurants,...

Could you please help me with your opinions? And I would also be glad to met you once I am there!

Thanks for all your advises

Miquel

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

Where would you be working, how do you plan to get to work, and how much time to you like to spend getting there?

Como-Lugano is 30-35 minutes by train, longer by car even if there is no traffic (and there will be).

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

Thanks Tom,

I will work close to Pazzallo and very close to the highway (1 km before entering to Lugano from the south) so I have seen that I shall drive 30 km from Como (I‘ll bring my own car); I guess it should be between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the traffic, ¿is that correct?

I have been once in Lugano and it is a beautiful place but I don’t know if in Como (I think there are 85.000 people) I would have more chances to meet people, go out at night, go to the Gym or even find more stores, cinemas, supermarkets, restaurants, expats communities, ...

I really don’t know what to expect from Como Città because I have never been there and I don’t know anybody who has been.
I am quite sure that renting an apartment is much cheaper than in Lugano and there are much more apartment rental offers to chose, but I don't know if there are more "possibilities" to enjoy and have more activities during the evenings or weekends.

Thanks for your advise, I am sure it will help me a lot.

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

With no traffic, Como to Lugano by car is 30-35 minutes (to Lugano Sud, another 5-10 for me), and in the morning or evening when everyone is going to/from work, often another 30 minutes or more!

My girlfriend used to live in Stabio, with my motorcycle it's 35 minutes, regardless of traffic, with a car in the evenings it was one hour.

Como is bigger, and shops are open later. It's also much closer to Milano, which is bigger than any Swiss city.

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

Hi, Thanks for your advice.

But could you please tell me what makes it better, besides the prices, for living? are there possibilities like terraces, bars, pubs, supermarkets, people meeting somewhere, gyms, pool, ...

What kind of interesting things can I find in Como Città that make worth spending 50 or 60 minutes driving every day to Lugano??

Do you live in Como?

Thanks again

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

It's a bigger city, so there are more bars, etc.

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

I think it will depend on where you know more people. What kind of job will you be doing? Will it be with a larger company? If so, I would check out where most of your colleagues live and try to stay close. In the beginning, those will be your only social contacts - and believe me, it's not too easy to make friends in this area (neither in Ticino nor in small-town Italy).

one additional note: don't forget there's a border control between Lugano and Como - during summer, this can turn nasty.

EXACTLY! Sometimes you spend 4-5 hours (very rarely that much, but it happens) in line waiting to pass the border. Also Friday eve, Monday morning many Italians go to Lugano/Mendrisio/Stabio to work, national holidays when all our German, Dutch neighbors travel to Italy....

Well, Lugano is about 100'000 people too. It is a paradise town between April and October. November to March it is pretty much dead but I love it either! If one person is bored here in Lugano that person will get bored in Como as well.

My personal opinion - go for Lugano and spend that 1-2 saved hours every day on something more useful than steering.

Lugano has many bars, lounges, beaches, restaurants, discos, fitness centers, cinemas, festivals, etc. It is very international. I like Como a lot but Lugano I just love!

Neither has 100,000. Lugano has ~55,000 while Como has ~85,000.

Still, I'd agree. Lugano is quite cool for its size, and if I were to work in or next to it I'd rather live there too than have to deal with commuting.

Keep in mind also that there are all kinds of complications with tax arrangements for people living in one country and working in another.

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

Well thank you both for your comments. It seems that Lugano is a better option especially regarding the traffic problems that I could have driving from/to Como.

It seems that Lugano is cool enough to pay a little bit more for the rent than in Como!!

I will start looking for some options in Lugano then, while I'll be interested in receiving more and more opinions and information about the subject!

Thanks again.

I would definately recommend living close to your colleagues, and i wouldn't recommend the long drive every day, this is the mistake I have made.

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

Lugano is probably 55'000 population but this number is misleading. There is Viganello, Paradiso, Pregassona, Breganzona, Montagnola etc etс etc which administratively are not Lugano. But they are Lugano to me. These administrative units are actually in one Lugano to me. One building on the same street is Lugano, the next one is considered to be Paradiso or Cassarate... Well, it is one Lugano regardlesss to what the postcode that area has. So 100'000 is pretty much the right number.

I am not going to dig into the arguments on which admin. unit is bigger or better. Como and Lugano are still two small nice and luxury villages on the beautiful lakes between the mountains

well.... Lugano will be better than Como, but don't expect anything even remotely as "cool" as Barcelona...

Re: living in Como Città or Lugano?

We would like to move to the suburbs of Lugano; can anyone give me some names of neighbourhoods where we could look for a family house to rent? (not apartment as we have 5 cats & a dog!). Is it normal to rent unfurnished like in France?

New to this site: thanks for welcoming me! Very informative so far........just working out how to try & use it!
