Rent increase

Dear all

just want to ask about your experience with dealing the increasing in rent.

we were notified today by our Regie that our apartment in Geneva contract is up and the landlord want to increase the rent by 10%. We have been living in this apartment for three years and it was newly renovated when we first moved in, so nothing has been done in these three years. When I asked the Regie on what ground does the Landlord want to increase the rent, they replied: with geneva's standard, the rent is too cheap, and if you want to ask the Landlord, it is possible he/she will take the apartment back on the market and we will have to move out in 2 months.

Just want to check if they have to provide a reason for rent increase or they can just do whatever they wish. Because it is possible that the Regie will come back and tell us that the landlord wants more than 10% increase.

thank you!
