Extremely annoying renovations in the building

Since about twpo weeks, there are renovations in our building, and in fact in the neighborhood. I understand that it is essential to maintain the building, but it enormously reduces the quality of our life there (noise, dirt, dask, windows in the living room are closed by the shutters and there is no any day light etc.). You can imagine how bad it is when you have to work from home... What does the Swiss law say? Can we demand some reimbursement for our rent?

Re: Extremely annoying renovations in the building

We had the same problem earlier this summer but they are legally allowed to make noise after 7am until 8pm if necessary, but have to take a break from noisy work between 12 and 2pm. Don't let them fob you off by saying the lunchtime rule is only until 1pm (cheeky builders told me when I went up to complain - my head was pounding ).

They were usually finished by 6pm and didn't make loud noise every day but once they start with the hammer drill, any concentration you have on work just evaporates...

It might be worth a quick call to your landlord / agency just to register that you are not happy and that you work from home but I think there is scant chance of any reduction in rent. Maintenance is a normal part of the living conditions.

I sure hope it's not the elevator. Where I used to live, it took them 5 months to put in a new elevator!!

Actually, for the city of Zurich the rules are as follows:
From 12.00 until 14.00 Uhr and from 19.00 until 07.00 "loud" ("lärmig") building activities are prohibited, with the exception of excavating, filling and concreting activities between 13.00 and 14.00. Some further exceptions also apply (cf. Art. 5(d) LSV).

Or in plain text. You have to put up with building noise from 7-12 and 14-19 (and sometimes 13-19 depending on the building work being done).

Loud gardening work and housekeeping has more severe restrictions.... 8-12 and 14-19. So please do not disturb the builders by vacuuming already at 7 o'clock or at 1 o'clock...

Its the worst when you are trying to work. Where I work in vevey they have been doing roadworks RIGHT in front of the building (we are groundfloor) the vibrations and noise of the machines really is enough to make you go mad

Re: Extremely annoying renovations in the building

You have to look at the situation that at least it will come to an end and hopefully the renovations will be an improvement on your life thereon.

My UK home is below the West Coast Main Line Railway and the trains are not noisy. However, once every 5 years, engineers lift the tracks with heavy noisy machinery over a long weekend all day and night. To me this is perfectly acceptable and better than having a neighbour with a dog barking all the time or having rowdy parties every weekend.
